Baseball Extends Winning Streak to Seven

Wayne State swept Friday's doubleheader at UMSL.

ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- The Wayne State University baseball team (7-0 overall) continued its impressive start to the 2019 season on Friday with two wins at Missouri-St. Louis (0-9 overall).  The Warriors used a dazzling performance from Hunter Brown (St. Clair Shores, Mich. / Lakeview) (2-0) to win game one 12-1 and another strong outing from Dillon McInerney (Richmond, Mich,) (2-0) in game two to win 2-0, completing the doubleheader sweep.

It is the best start in program history since 2014 when the Warriors began the season with eight straight wins.

GAME ONE (W, 12-1)
HOW IT HAPPENED

The Warriors wasted no time in setting the tone in game one and loaded the bases after singles from Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.) and Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) plus a Michael MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Country Day / The Lawrenceville School) walk.  WSU got on the board with a wild pitch before Tristen Jorah (Clinton Twp., Mich. / Sterling Heights Stevenson) extended the lead to 2-0 with an RBI groundout.  CJ Drogosch (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) kept the early scoring going with an RBI single into center field.  Chris Tanderys (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) knocked the UMSL starter out of the game with an RBI single down the right field line that gave the Green & Gold a 4-0 advantage.

Brown used three strikeouts to work around a fielding error and a wild pitch to keep the Tritons off the scoreboard in the bottom of the second inning.  Brown continued to dominate the opposing batters, not allowing a base hit through six innings.

An error allowed Finkbeiner to reach in the top of the eighth inning and he advanced to third on a passed ball before MacLean pushed WSU's lead to 5-0 with a single to right field.  Bases-loaded walks to Drogosch, pinch-hitter Troy Daring, Jr. (Brampton, Ont.) and Noah Miller (Macomb, Mich. / University Liggett) to give the Warriors and eight-run cushion.  In the top of the ninth inning, pinch-hitter Rudy Ramirez (Brighton, Mich.) doubled home a run in his first collegiate at-bat.  A two-run pinch-hit single from Greg McDade (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Stevenson) and a pinch-hit RBI single from Josh Blaszczak (Brownstown, Mich. / Riverview Gabriel Richard) gave WSU a 12-0 lead.  UMSL scored a run in the bottom of the ninth inning to make the final score 12-1.

AT THE PLATE
Drogosch and McDade both drove in a pair of runs, while DeLanoy went 2-for-4.  A total of eight Warriors tallied hits.

ON THE MOUND
Brown did not allow a hit over six innings and finished with 11 strikeouts, including eight of his first nine outs.  Max Moon (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Gabriel Richard) worked the final three innings and allowed an earned run with three strikeouts to notch his first career save.

GAME TWO (W, 2-0)
HOW IT HAPPENED

The Warriors threatened in the top of the second inning with two base hits but were unable to push any runs across to start game two.  McInerney was able to work around an error and a double to strand two UMSL baserunners in the fifth inning.  The Tritons loaded the bases on two base hits and a walk in the bottom of the seventh inning but McInerney did well to keep the game tied at 0-0.

Wayne State took a 1-0 lead as Blaszczak scored on a wild pitch.  WSU doubled its margin on a sacrifice fly to right field from Finkbeiner.

Richard Hovde (Saline, Mich.) replaced McInerney and worked scoreless eighth and ninth innings to secure the victory and post his first save of the season.

AT THE PLATE
WSU found a way to generate enough offense to win as MacLean, Drogosch, Blaszczak and Ramirez all posted base knocks.

ON THE MOUND
McInerney worked seven scoreless frames and struck out seven, while giving up five hits and a walk.  McInerney has not allowed a run in his first 13 innings of action this season.  Hovde tossed the final two innings and did not allow a hit.

UP NEXT
The Warriors will conclude the series at UMSL on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m. ET.
