Softball Splits Again; this time at Northwood

Claydon smacks two home runs in the game one victory.

MIDLAND, Mich. – For the fourth consecutive day of GLIAC play, the Wayne State University softball team (13-5 overall, 6-4 GLIAC) split a conference doubleheader.  The Warriors won the opener 7-5, while host Northwood University (12-6 overall, 4-4 GLIAC) won the nightcap 10-2 in six innings.

GAME ONE RECAP
The Warriors scored four times in the top of the first for the early advantage.  Senior second baseman Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) had a one-out double down the right field line and senior shortstop Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.) reached on an error.  After an RBI single by senior catcher Brooke Turkalj (St. Jacobs, Ont.), senior pitcher Amy Claydon (Cambridge, Ont.) blasted her second home run of the season.

The Timberwolves answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame.  Maddie Coulter and Tara Gross started the inning with back-to-back singles before a wild pitch and an RBI groundout by Julia Gross.  Grace Dutoi followed with an RBI single.

Claydon settled down and retired the next seven NU batters.  Northwood grabbed a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the fourth with four singles, which included an RBI single by Coulter and a two-run single by Tara Gross.

The WSU deficit did not last long as the Warriors regained the lead in the top of the fifth.  Psenicka had a leadoff single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kressler.  With two outs, Claydon smacked a two-run home run to center field.

After having just one player record 10 total bases in a game over the last eight years, Wayne State had it happen twice in one week.  In addition to her two home runs, Claydon also walloped a double in the third giving her 10 total bases in the contest.

Claydon allowed a two-out walk and a single in the bottom of the sixth and was relieved by junior pitcher Paige Ameel (Marysville, Mich.), who retired all four batters she faced for her fifth career save.

Sophomore center fielder Brooke Nadolny (Clinton Twp., Mich. / L'Anse Creuse) led off the top of the seventh with a solo blast to right center extending the Warrior lead to 7-5.

IN THE CIRCLE
Claydon (2-0) notched her second victory of the week despite allowing five runs (four earned) on nine hits in 5.2 innings.  She struck out two and walked one.  Ameel recorded three groundouts and one flyout in the four batters she faced.

Shayna Frank (8-3) went the distance for the Timberwolves.  She surrendered seven runs (six earned) on nine hits.  She struck out three and did not walk a batter.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Claydon went 3-for-3 with five RBI, while Nadolny and Psenicka each had two hits.

LEADING THE TIMBERWOLVES

GAME TWO RECAP
Northwood scored four times in the bottom of the first, on a pair of home runs.  Coulter led off the frame with a solo shot, while Samantha Slick had a three-run blast for her first four-bagger of the season.

Wayne State pulled within 4-2 with two runs in the fourth.  Psenicka worked an eight-pitch walk to start the inning.  Kressler and Turkalj had back-to-back singles to load the bases.  After a fielder's choice, senior first baseman Emma Adams (Rockwood, Ont.) had a sacrifice fly, and senior third baseman Rose Myers (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) had a ground-rule RBI double.

NU's Grace Dutoi hit a grand slam in the fourth inning giving the hosts an 8-2 lead.  Coulter hit a solo shot in the fifth, and the Timberwolves finished the game with an unearned run in the sixth.
