Bears can't hold first half lead in loss at #24 Tiffin

CSP led for over 20 minutes in the first half before Dragons pull away

TIFFIN, Ohio - Concordia-St. Paul (7-6, 4-5 GLIAC) wasn't able to hold onto early momentum, falling 20-11 at #24 Tiffin University (9-6, 6-4 GLIAC) on Friday night at Frost-Kalnow Stadium.

The Golden Bears next head to Allendale, Michigan next for a Sunday tilt at #13 Grand Valley State at 11 a.m. (CDT) in their final road regular season game of the 2018 season.

Concordia sophomore Kailey Heinl scored 1:25 into play on a feed from sophomore Alina Boyce and just over three minutes later, CSP held a 3-0 lead as junior Sheala Osborne and sophomore Maddie Hentges each scored in the early minutes.

Heinl scored again in the 14th minute which was followed by senior Kallie LaValle finding freshman Erica Peterson for her first of three goals and a 5-2 lead, the second three goal lead of the game for Concordia at the 15:20 mark, just past the halfway point of the opening half.

Peterson would go on to net a hat trick, the first of her career.

Following the 5-2 lead, the Dragons exploded on their home turf for an 8-1 run to take a 10-6 lead into the locker room. Tiffin finally tied the game at 6-6 at 22:12 and took its first lead at 23:47.

Concordia worked back in the early minutes of second half as Hentges scored her second goal 20 seconds after the opening draw. Freshman Margot Coomes answered a Tiffin goal at 2:30, scoring 30 seconds after the Dragons to make it an 11-8 margin with 27 minutes left in the contest.

From there, Tiffin scored the next three to start it second 8-1 scoring run for a 19-9 lead with just over 10 minutes to play.

Joining Peterson with three points in the game were Hentges and Boyce with two goals and an assist each. Heinl added four ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers to go with her two goals and LaValle had three draw controls.

Draw controls proved to be pivotal as Tiffin held a 23-10 margin on the draw to gain possession. The Dragons were able to use the possession to carry a 34-25 shot margin (26-16 SOG) as turnovers were even (15-15) in the game with each team committing nine in the first and six in the second halves.

The game featured eight yellow cards, with Concordia charged with the first five before Tiffin had three in the final six minutes.

Tiffin took advantage, scoring goals on four of the five cards during its scoring runs.

Concordia countered late, with Peterson scoring on a 2-player advantage at 25:43 of the second and again on with an extra player in the 29th minute.

The Dragons were led by Elle Hamilton (7g, 1a) and Elle MacMillan (6g, 2a) with eight points each while Amanda Flotteron had six points (4g, 2a). Hamilton also had 12 draw controls with MacMillan adding eight.
