Box Score 2 The Malone University softball team (10-30-1, 2-24 GLIAC) concluded their season with a pair of losses to Lake Superior State University (MI) (8-22, 7-17 GLIAC) on Sunday.
The Pioneers were on the verge of victory in game one, but fell to the Lakers 6-5. Sophomore
Desi Hengoed staked Malone to a 2-0 lead when her double to left-center field knocked in two runs. The Lakers scored single runs in the second and third innings to level the contest at two before Malone regained the lead in the bottom of the third when Hengoed scored from third on a sac fly from freshman
Erika Gerber.
The teams traded two runs apiece in the fourth inning to keep Malone ahead by a run 5-4. Sophomore
Emily Isla drove in both of Malone's runs in the inning with a sharp single to right field. Lake Superior then retook the lead in the fifth on a Malone error and never relinquished it. Malone's best chance to tie came in the bottom of the fifth, when they put runners on second and third with two outs, but they couldn't come up with the clutch hit to drive them home.
Malone outhit Lake Superior State 9-7 in the game, with each team committing four errors. Isla and Hengoed each collected two hits for Malone, both of which were doubles for Hengoed. Junior
Jillian Coyle (7-13) was dealt the loss, but only two of the six runs she gave up were of the earned variety.
Game two was less competitive as Lake Superior State plated runs in five of their six trips to the plate. Freshman
Allison Mercado drove in Malone's lone run with the Pioneers trailing 7-0 in the top of the sixth inning on a line drive to center field. Isla and freshmen
Mikayla Fowler and
Lauren Searcy joined Mercado in the hit column. With the loss, junior
Stephanie Byrne ends the season 3-16 in the circle.
