Malone Drops Pair of Close Games Against Ohio Dominican; Holztrager Ties Run Scored Record

The Malone University softball team lost 6-4 in a hard-fought nine-inning game against Ohio Dominican University in game one and lost 11-6 in game two on Tuesday night. Senior shortstop Alexa Holztrager recorded two runs scored in game two to tie the school record in runs scored with 107.

Malone will return to Pioneer Field on Thursday, April 21st at 3:00 p.m. against Davis & Elkins College (WV) on Senior Day. The seniors will be honored before the doubleheader.

Game One Recap:

Caley Ritts generated the RBI single in the bottom of the second inning to put Malone ahead 1-0.

The Panthers tied the contest at 1-1 in the top of the third inning off of Taylor Kline's RBI single.

Ohio Dominican continued with the runs scored in the top of the fourth inning, notching two more to extend their lead to 3-1.

The Pioneers responded right back in the bottom of the fourth inning when Shelby Hulin singled up the middle, allowing pinch runner Kennedy Johnson to cross home plate to cut the deficit 3-2. Two plays later, pinch hitter Juliana Shultes grounded out to the second baseman to drive Emily Isla in for the run, tying the game up at 3-3.

The Panthers bounced back in the top of the fifth inning to score off of Taylor Kline's double to center field to regain the lead to 4-3.

The Pioneers would tie the game again in the bottom of the fifth inning when Kerri Manley singled up the middle to drive home Ashley Beck.

Malone put themselves in scoring position to win the game in the bottom of the seventh when designated hitter Abbie Hughes opened the inning with a triple to right field. However, the Panthers' defense took advantage of Hughes being off base and got her out with a pick off.  Neither team would score a run until the ninth inning.

In the ninth inning, Ohio Dominican scored their fifth run off a wild pitch and notched their sixth run off a Kelsey Albanese RBI single to take the 6-4 lead.

The Pioneers had Hughes at second and Isla at first base with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, but Manley struck out swinging, losing 6-4 in a heartbreaking nine inning contest.

Isla, Hughes, and Manley were all impressive at the plate, going 3-for-4, while Isla and Manley added a run scored and Hughes registered a triple and double.

Pitcher Kari Hall went the distance and threw her 18th complete game and recorded seven strikeouts. She now has collected 117 strikeouts on the season.

Malone came out strong in game two as they belted out four runs in the top of the first inning to take a commanding 4-0 lead.

However, ODU answered back by scoring one run in the bottom of the first and two in the third inning to cut the deficit 4-3.

Hulin singled to center field to drive Holstrager in for the run to push the lead to 5-3 in the top of the fourth inning.
