Tennis Drops the Opening Match of the Spring Break Trip to Illinois-Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - The Lake Superior State men's and women's tennis teams competed against the University of Illinois-Springfield Prairie Stars on Saturday, Feb. 29 in Springfield, Ill. in a non-conference match. The women's team fell by a final score of 5-1 while the men's team was defeated by a score of 5-2 in the match. 

On the women's side, the Lakers dropped the doubles point as only the team's No. 2 tandem of sophomore Kegaan Malpass and junior AlexiAnn Drouin won their match.  In the singles competition, AlexiAnn Drouin at the No. 1 spot lost a tough battle in the third set by scores of 3-6, 7-5, and 1-6. No. 2 singles player Nadege Koua recorded a big win with scores of 5-7, 7-6 (4), and 6-1. No. 3 player Muskaan Ranjan dropped two partials for 0-6, 4-6. Malpass playing in the No. 4 position lost 5-7, 1-6 and freshman Riley Gilman fell at No.5 by totals of 2-6, 2-6. In the final singles spot, No. 6, Madelin Harrod's match was unfinished at 1-2 during a pro set.

On the men's side, the Lakers lost the doubles point as No. 1 and No. 2 pairs were defeated while the No. 3 duo of Diego Penz and Krishan Taneja, won 6-3. In singles matches, senior Joe Gilman, the team's No.1 player, fell by scores of 1-6 and 3-6 while freshman Juho Kantola picked up his first collegiate win with scores of 6-4 and 6-1. At the No. 3 spot, Krishan Taneja lost 2-6, 3-6 followed by Ali Sahibzada at No. 4 with a tough match in favor of the Prairie Stars 3-6, 7-5, 1-6. Harris Irfan Ul Haq at the No. 5 spot fell 5-7, 1-6 while Diego Penz got his first victory of the season in the No. 6 spot, by scores of 6-1 and 6-4.

The Lakers will return to the court tomorrow Sunday, March 1 against McKendree University in Lebanon, Ill.
