Warrior Volleyball Sweeps Walsh

NORTH CANTON, Ohio -- The Wayne State University volleyball team (10-17, 7-9) won in straight sets at Walsh (5-21, 2-14) on Saturday afternoon. It was the first Warrior sweep since Sep. 20 at Lake Erie.

Walsh was leading 9-5 to begin the first set. WSU tied the set at 10-10 on a Cavalier attack error. Walsh led 16-15 before the Warriors went on an 8-2 run to take a 23-18 lead and would win the set 25-19. WSU took its last six points on Walsh errors.

Mikayla Shell (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) conected for a kill to tie the second set at 10-10. The set remained tied at 14-14. A Cavalier kill gave the home team a 22-19 kill but the Warriors would rally and end the set on a 6-1 run to win 25-23.

Heather Weiss (Fort Gratiot, Mich. / Port Huron) posted a kill and Kristen Bulkiewicz (LaSalle, Ont. / Sandwich) served up an ace to give WSU a 6-3 lead to begin the third set. A Green & Gold 8-1 run extended the lead to 17-9. Walsh rallied to pull within two at 23-21 but WSU was able to complete the sweep with another 25-23 victory.

Weiss led the Warriors with 13 kills while Madison Reeves (Indianapolis, Ind. / Avon) finished with 30 assists and Carlee Hunt (Waterford, Mich. / Walled Lake Northern) and Hannah Williams (Plainwell, Mich. / Delton Kellogg (Kalamazoo Valley CC)) finished with nine digs each.

WSU will finish up the regular season next weekend at home, beginning with Ashland on Friday at 7 PM. The top eight teams advance regardless of division to the GLIAC Tournament, Currently, WSU is tied for ninth with Malone at 7-9.
