Cardinals shoot past Warriors for third straight win

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball team jumped all over Wayne State University early in the first of a weekend Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference series Friday at the James E. O'Neill Jr. Arena.

The Cardinals outscored the Warriors 23-11 in the second quarter and led by 17 at the half. SVSU held off every attempted run by Wayne State and cruised to a 78-63 win, a third straight for the Cardinals.

The victory pushes SVSU to 7-8 overall and 7-8 in the GLIAC with just three games left in the regular season.

The second-quarter run for the Cardinals was capped off by three straight buckets from Kaitlyn Zarycki to close the half. Zarycki scored 10 of her 18 points in the second.

Kyndall Spires took over inside in the third, pouring in 10 points on 4-of-4 from the field in the frame on her way to 13 points. Spires added a team-high eight rebounds. Maddie Barrie lifted the SVSU offense from outside with three 3-pointers and finished with 18 points.

Maddie Maloney recorded a team-high eight assists, while Tori DePerry finished with 11 points and six rebounds off the bench.

The Cardinals shot 32-of-60 from the field, 5-of-19 from deep, and 9-of-14 from the line, recording 15 assists, 12 steals and 11 turnovers, while outrebounding the Warriors 30-23.

Becca Fugate led Wayne State with 12 points.

The series concludes with the final home game of the regular season for the Cardinals at 3 pm Saturday at the James E. O'Neill Jr. Arena.
