SVSU walks off in game one, splits with Wayne State

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team continued a weekend series with Wayne State University in a doubleheader Saturday at the SVSU Baseball Complex.

The Cardinals walked off for a 7-6 win in game one in eight innings before falling to the Warriors 13-2 in the finale. The split moves SVSU to 10-8 overall and 6-5 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

The Warriors took a 2-0 lead after the first in game one. The Cardinals rallied with four runs in the third to move in front. The inning got rolling with an RBI single from Colin Cornwell. After the Warriors intentionally walked Hayden Jatczak, Martin Money homered to drive in three runs and put SVSU up 4-2.  

Wayne State responded with three in the fourth, but the Cardinals tied the game on a Cornwell double in the bottom of the inning. Connor McClennen put SVSU in front with a single in the sixth. After the Warriors evened the game in the seventh to extend it to the eighth, Thomas Loftus came through with a walk-off double to lift SVSU to the win.

Hunter Merillat (2-0) got the win in relief, pitching three innings, allowing one unearned run. He walked six and struck out four.

In game two, the Warriors scored the first 13 runs of the game to take control and cruise to the win. SVSU got on the board in the fifth on a Wayne State error, while Jeffrey Reseigh earned the lone Cardinal RBI of the game on a single in the sixth.

Christopher Schmees (0-2) was charged with the loss, allowing three runs on three hits, walking one and striking out one in one inning.

The series closes with one 9-inning game at 1:05 pm Sunday at the SVSU Baseball Complex.
