Golden Bears score bounce-back win

Concordia secures first win of 2021 campaign

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Concorida-St. Paul women's lacrosse (1-1) secured the weekend split on Sunday afternoon with a 13-3 victory over Lewis University (0-1) on a cold, overcast day at Lewis Stadium on a snow plowed field surrounded by late February snowbanks.

Concordia returns to the field on March 6 in its home opener against #2 Lindenwood at the Concordia Dome at Sea Foam Stadium in the non-conference finale.

It was a strong all-around bounce-back for CSP, who increased its offensive production from one to 13 goals while also flipping its defense, going from 20 goals allowed to just three in less than 24 hours of time.

Senior goalie Katie Lottsfeldt blanked the Flyers in the first half while recording five saves and finished the game with a strong .750 save percentage, picking up nine saves while allowing three goals. She also led all players in the game with eight ground ball picksup.

The offensive effort was balanced as junior Sara McNicoll led Concordia with a hat trick while three others also had three point games including junior Erica Peterson who had a goal and two assists as CSP went into the break leading 6-0. Senior Margot Coomes and redshirt freshman Ellie Fedorowski each added two goals and an assist off the bench.

Senior Sarah Pierson had two goals, but it was her all-around play that stood out as she led the team with five draw controls as CSP edged Lewis 11-7 on the draw, and she also produced six ground balls as Concordia racked up 37 ground balls as a team, edging Lewis with 29.

The teams combined for 56 turnovers but it was Lewis with 30 while CSP had a 7-1 edge in caused turnovers led by sophomore Maia Hodgins with two as she also added three ground balls off the bench.

Seven of Concordia's 13 goals were assists, with senior Lex Seifert matching Peterson with two assists.

Concordia finished the game with a 28-15 final shot margin including 24-12 on goal. Concordia was also more efficient moving the ball up the field with 13-of-18 on clears while forcing Lewis to under 50 percent at 11-of-23.

Paige Zahler scored all three goals for the Flyers, two coming on free position shots while Meltonique Bowen led Lewis with seven ground balls. Brigid Fornek took the loss in net, making 11 saves and securing five ground balls.
