Sheets propels Golden Bears to first win of 2023

The freshman netted five goals including the game-winner

QUINCY, Ill. - Concordia-St. Paul women's lacrosse bounced back quickly, 24 hours after a season-opening loss to defeat Quincy University 11-10 on Sunday afternoon as each team levels their record at 1-1.

The game featured three lead changes and five ties with freshman Lauren Sheets breaking the game's fifth and final tie with 1:37 to play in the fourth quarter, scoring with a one-player advantage for the victory.

After Sheets secured the go-ahead goal, she would also scoop up the draw control, allowing CSP to retain possession with the lead, although Quincy was able to force a turnover and get a game-tying shot off with four seconds left, saved by sophomore goalie Maddy Huebner to preserve the win in the closing seconds.

Sheets' game-winner was one of five goals in a six-point breakout performance on a day when a number of freshmen had their breakthrough performances in a road win.

Three Golden Bears had three-plus point performances led by Sheets' six, with freshman Kayleigh Nelson dishing out three assists and adding two ground balls and a draw control while freshman Susie Monson scoring twice and adding an assist with three draw controls and a ground ball while firing a team-high 10 shots including seven on goal.

Sydney Smith and Sara Kaiser each scored their first career goals in the win, as well, while Claire Flahaven had three caused turnovers and a pair of draw controls with a ground ball.

Huebner played 60 minutes in the cage, picking up the victory while making nine saves while the defense was sparked by sophomore Meghan McGowan with five caused turnovers, second-most in a game in program history, and three ground balls.

Libby Fowler also added two assists and three ground balls and Anna Fisher chipped in with a two-goal performance, adding two draw controls.

The game was tightly contested throughout, with the largest lead of the day being a two-goal margin, which Concordia held on three separate occasions: 7-5 at half, 9-7 at the end of the third quarter and again 10-8 from the 9:39 to 4:33 mark of the fourth quarter when Quincy added back-to-back goals at 4:33 and 3:49 to play to tie the game.

Nearly every team statistic was just as closely guarded in the final tally as the score reflected, with Concordia leading in shots (26-23) although shots on goal were tied at 19. CSP committed one fewer turnover (20-21) and both teams misfired on five clear attempts, with CSP converting 17-22 to Quincy's 18-23. CSP had a 20-19 edge in ground balls but Quincy controlled the draw by three (14-11).

Concordia improves to 2-0 against Quincy, defeating QU 20-5 last year at the Concordia Dome.

The Golden Bears, who have faced a pair of Great Lakes Valley (GLVC) opponents to start the year, continue competing against the GLVC next weekend with a road trip to the Kansas City, Missouri area to face Rockhurst on Friday at 4 p.m. before heading to St. Joseph, Missouri on Sunday at noon.
