GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University backed up its Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opening win with another strong performance, running away from Davenport University on the road Saturday in Grand Rapids, Mich.

The Cardinals started fast and never trailed in a 68-39 win over the Panthers to move to 7-2 overall and 2-0 in the GLIAC.

How it Happened:

  • The Cardinals led the game by 10 points after the first quarter that saw SVSU jump out to a 14-2 lead to start the game.
  • SVSU extended its advantage in the second quarter, starting the frame with a 10-3 run that was capped by 3-pointers from Ashley Buchholz and Tori DePerry.
  • Maddie Barrie closed the first half with a 3-pointer to stretch the Cardinal lead to 36-17 at the break.
  • SVSU continued to stretch its lead early in the third with a 7-0 run to open the second half.
  • The Cardinals outscored the Panthers 21-9 in the third, including eight points from reigning GLIAC Player of the Week Kaitlyn Zarycki.

Inside the Box Score:

  • Kaitlyn Zarycki scored a game-high 18 points to lead the Cardinals, adding six rebounds and three steals.
  • Ashley Buchholz came off the bench to add 15 points and was 4-of-10 from deep.
  • Tori DePerry finished with 13 points and added a team-high seven rebounds.
  • Maddie Barrie added nine points and five rebounds.
  • The Cardinals shot 26-of-57 from the field, 11-of-24 from deep, and 5-of-8 from the line.
  • SVSU combined for 16 assists and outrebounded the Panthers 44-25.
  • Loni Sales led the Panthers with eight points. Davenport was held to 12-of-53 shooting from the field.

From Head Coach Jenny Pruett:

We knew we only had four games in December. Having seven games in 13 days in November, was a nice change of pace. We are taking one game at a time and are excited to have a great 2-0 start.

 
We talked about keeping the game clean and dominating from the tip. Watching the Wayne State game and having them force 23 turnovers we knew it could get ugly if we didn't take care of the ball. That was a huge focus today.
 

Defense, especially on the road, is so key. If our defense can get going then we can have some fun on offense. We are doing a really good job of communicating and because of that, we are getting stops.

SVSU returns home to open the home portion of the 2021-22 GLIAC schedule, hosting rival Northwood University at 6 pm Thursday at the James E. O'Neill Jr. Arena.
