Baseball Sweeps Purdue Northwest

The Warriors outscored the Pride 52-14 during the four-game series.

HAMMOND, Ind. -- The Wayne State University baseball team (20-8 overall, 12-4 GLIAC) topped Purdue Northwest (9-20 overall, 3-17 GLIAC) 15-5 on Sunday to sweep the series.  The Warriors scored 11 runs in the first three innings to set the tone and strengthen their grasp on first place in the GLIAC standings.  WSU outscored PNW 52-14 during the four-game series.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Redshirt junior Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) kept the offensive momentum from Saturday going into Sunday with an RBI double to start the scoring the first inning.  The next batter, graduate student Michael MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Country Day / The Lawrenceville School) hit his third home run is as many games to push the advantage to 4-0.  Junior Rudy Ramirez (Brighton, Mich.) made it 5-0 after one inning with an RBI single up the middle.

DeLanoy launched his seventh home run of the year to right field in the top of the second inning before MacLean scored on a wild pitch to give WSU an 8-0 lead.  DeLanoy drove in another run in the top of the third inning on a single into right.  WSU would score twice more in the third on a balk and an RBI single by senior Ryne Travis (Lockport, Ill. / Lockport Twp.).  PNW broke through for two runs on two hits in the bottom of the third inning.

Ramirez drove in a run with an infield single in top of the sixth inning.  An error later in the inning allowed two runs to score and give the visitors a 14-2 lead.  A solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning made it 14-3.  A sacrifice fly from junior Jacob Badalamenti (Clinton Twp., Mich. / Warren De La Salle) in the top of the eighth inning plated Wayne State's 15th run of the day.

AT THE PLATE
DeLanoy continued to swing a red-hot bat and went 3-for-6 with four RBI and three runs scored.  He drove in 12 runs in the series.  MacLean posted a 2-for-3 day with three RBI and three runs scored.  Ramirez finished 2-for-3 with three runs and two RBI.  Travis also had another solid day at the plate, going 2-for-4 with an RBI.

ON THE MOUND
Junior Chad Sommers (Jonesville, Mich.) (2-2) started and struck out five batters in his six innings of work and allowed just two runs.  Redshirt junior Jacob Raymond (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica Eisenhower) was the first out of the bullpen and allowed a run in his frame of action.

Redshirt sophomore Joey Muzljakovich (Mayfield, Mich. / Traverse City St. Francis) tossed a scoreless eighth inning with one strikeout before redshirt senior Brendan Bilkovic (West Bloomfield, Mich.) was in charge of the ninth inning and allowed two unearned runs, while striking out two.
