MIDLAND, Mich. - The Lake Superior State men's basketball team suffered a 74-69 loss to the Northwood University Timberwolves in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) game on Saturday, Jan. 11 in Midland, Mich. 

The Lakers fell behind in the game early as the Timberwolves scored 16 unanswered points in the first half to take a 16-0 lead over the Lakers in the first five minutes of play. Cody Ley, who came off the bench, would provide a spark to the Lakers lineup as he made three straight three-point jump shots to keep the Timberwolves at bay and cut down the lead to 13 points. 

With 5:50 remaining in the first half, freshman Xander Okerlund made a three-point shot to bring the Lakers within single digits (34-25) and would begin a rally in the final minutes of the half from the Lakers as they were only trailing by a point at the end of the half (44-43). 

At 16:56 of the second half, Cody Ley would continue his strong play in the game as he sunk another three-point shot to give the Lakers their first lead of the game as they went ahead 49-48.Through the next stretch of play, the two team would exchange points and with just under eight minutes left in the game were tied at 60. 

With 1:44 left in the game, the Lakers were trailing the Timberwolves by only a point but Northwood would control the final time in play, taking the conference game by a final score of 74-69.

The Lakers went 23-of-46 in the game for a 50.0 shooting percentage as compared to the Timberwolves 48.4 shooting percentage, going 30-of-62 in the game. 

C.J. Robinson led the Lakers with 15 points in the game but the offense was balanced for the team as five players had 11 or more points in the game. Ashton Sherrell finished with 13 points, Ley with 12 points, and Justin Fischer and Xander Okerlund each finished with 11 points. Fischer led the Lakers in both rebounds with 10 and assists with seven.

The Lakers will then continue the stretch of road games next weekend as the team heads to the western Upper Peninsula to take on Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan. Lake State will play the Huskies on Thursday, Jan. 16 at 7:30 p.m. followed by a game on Saturday, Jan. 18 against the Wildcats at 1:00 p.m.
