Women's Basketball Drops a Hard Fought Game against Parkside, 64-55

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State women's basketball team dropped a hard fought game against the Parkside Rangers by a final score of 64-55 in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) contest on Saturday, Jan. 25 in the Bud Cooper Gymnasium.

The Lakers fell behind to the Rangers by a 7-2 margin in the first three minutes of the first quarter. Senior forward Lexie Khon would then score two straight layups for the Lakers to bring the team within four points of Parkside (10-6). The Rangers would begin to pull away from the Lakers as they extended the lead to 12 points with three minutes left in the quarter (22-10). Khon would spark the Lakers strong play to end the quarter as she scored five of the seven straight Lake State points as the opening ten minutes ended with Parkside holding a 22-17 lead.

To open the second quarter, Sadie DeWildt netted a three point jump shot to bring the Lakers within two points of tying the game. Parkside responded with six straight points to regain an eight point lead over the Lakers and at the five minute mark of the quarter, would extend the lead to 11 points when Carolina Rahkonen made a three-point jump shot (33-22). At the end of the first half, Parkside held a 10 point lead, 38-28, over the Lakers.

The third quarter was low scoring in the opening half but the Rangers were able to build upon their lead as they went ahead by 14 points at 5:37 of the quarter (44-30). Through lots of back and forth scoring in the final minutes of the quarter, the Lakers were able to get back within single digits of the Rangers as the frame ended with a score of 48-39.

In the final ten minutes of the game, the Lakers were unable to even the score against the Rangers. The game ended in a final score of 64-55. The Lakers finished the game with a 41.2 shooting percentage while Parkside shot at 42.9%.

Khon finished as the Lakers scoring leader once again as she posted a game-high 19 points as she went 9-for-16 in the game while also adding six rebounds. Mattison Rayman also played well for the Lakers as she posted 13 points, six rebounds and four assists.

The Lakers will continue GLIAC play as they face Wayne State Thursday, Jan. 30 at 5:30p.m. in Detroit, Mich. The Lakers will then travel to Ashland, Ohio to face the Ashland University Eagles at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 1.
