Laker Volleyball Fall to Huskies 3-0

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State University volleyball team (1-15, 0-8 GLIAC) fell to the Michigan Tech Huskies (10-5, 4-4 GLIAC) by a final score of 3-0 on Friday.

The Lakers came out of the gate strong as Emily Kalinowski (South Lyon, Mich.) capped off an early 4-1 run by sneaking the ball over from the setter position for a kill, but the Huskies were able to tie up the set at 5-5. Michigan Tech was able to pull ahead, but this time it was the Lakers that rallied as an Emily Hagelthorn service ace tied the score at 11-11. However, the Huskies were able to use runs of 7-0 and 6-1 to claim the first set 25-14.

Both teams battled early in the second set with Emily McDaniel making her presence felt with a spike to give her team a slim 4-3 lead. The Huskies would then use a 6-1 run to pull ahead, but kills from Taylor Fleming (Rogers City, Mich.) and Nina White (Chelsea, Mich.) kept the Lakers within one. However, despite emphatic kills from White and Mariana Velasque (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), the Huskies would pull ahead and take the second set 25-18.

Valasque would open up the scoring for the Lakers, and kills from White and McDaniel helped their team battle early in the third set. The Huskies were able to pull ahead, but the Lakers rallied with runs of 3-1 and 4-1 that featured back-to-back kills from Fleming, forcing a Husky timeout. However, despite fending off three match points, Michigan Tech held on to take the third set and the match by respective scores of 25-18 and 3-0

White led the way offensively with nine kills, and Velasque was right behind her with eight. Meanwhile, Kalinowski earned 23 assists while also picking up 10 digs for the double-double, and Ally Lasley (Birch Run, Mich.) would also finish with double-digit digs.

The Lakers will look to bounce back when they welcome the Northern Michigan Wildcats to Bud Cooper Gymnasium on Saturday, Oct. 1 with the first serve scheduled for 4 p.m.
