Late Rally Not Enough for Men's Basketball at Davenport

The Warriors nearly erased a 10-point deficit over the final 2:28 on Thursday night.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Wayne State University men's basketball team (1-6 overall, 1-2 GLIAC) played its first GLIAC road game of the season on Thursday night at Davenport (8-1 overall, 2-1 GLIAC) and the Warriors nearly staged an epic comeback but fell 73-70.  WSU trailed by 10 with 2:28 remaining but trimmed the home lead to one but the Panthers were able to protect their home court with a three-point victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Latin Davis, Jr. (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Milan) gave the Warriors an early 5-2 lead at the 18:07 mark of the opening half.  A quick 7-0 run from Davenport gave the Panthers a 12-5 advantage with 14:27 on the clock.  DU continued to control the tempo and held onto a 15-9 lead at the 11:49 mark after a free throw by Chris Rollins.  A triple by Janeau Joubert pushed the home lead to 21-10 with 8:32 left before halftime.  The Green & Gold used a 7-0 rally to trim the deficit to 21-17 at the 6:51 mark.  Antonio Marshall (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) connected from deep, pulling the Warriors within two, 24-22, with 4:10 remaining.  A jumper from Darian Owens-White (Ypsilanti, Mich. / River Rouge) tied the game at 24-24 at the 3:41 mark and he kept the game tied at 26-26 with a contested layup on the following possession.  WSU pulled within one, 31-30, on a bucket from Owens-White with 20 seconds left to play, which would be the halftime score.

Wayne State took its first lead, since the 18:07 point of the first half on the first basket of the second half by from Karim Murray (Detroit, Mich. / Western International).  Another two points from Davis pushed the advantage to three, 34-31.  Murray's three-pointer at the 15:53 mark gave the Warriors their largest lead of the night, 39-33.  DU answered with a triple from Avery Hudson at the 15-minute mark to pull within three points.  A pair of free throws from Rollins tied the game at 40-40 with 13:45 remaining and another freebie from Dyllon Hudson-Emory gave the Panthers a one-point lead.  The deficit grew to four after a trey from Robbie Bramhill at the 12:21 mark as Wayne State searched for its first field goal in nearly four minutes.  Murray ended the drought with a tip-in at the 11:24 mark, pulling the Warriors withing four, 46-42.  The DU offense stayed hot and the home advantage reached double-digits, 52-42, following a triple by Hudson with 10:32 left to play.  Xavier Cochran (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron) made his first attempt from behind the arc to keep WSU close, 56-47, at the 7:52 mark.  A layup from Murray cut the home lead to seven, 60-53, with 5:50 remaining.  After the final media timeout of the night, Owens-White made both free throws to bring WSU within five, 60-55.  However, Davenport had an answer and led 65-57 at the three-minute mark.  Wayne State trailed by five following a triple from Owens-White with 1:39 remaining and Marshall connected from deep on the following possession to trim the deficit to three, 69-66.  A late steal by Cochran led to two free throws from Davis to make it 69-68 in favor of DU.  Delano Smith's first points of the night came with 47 seconds left to play, pushing the home advantage to 71-68.  Owens-White attacked the basket and made both from the charity stripe to make it 71-70 with 37 seconds left to play.  Smith grabbed his own miss and put it back in to give DU a 73-70 lead.  Davis had a look to the tie the game as time expired but the prayer went unanswered.
