BOX SCORES: GAME 1 | GAME 2
DETROIT - After losing the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader, 3-1, the Wayne State University baseball team (27-16, 19-12 GLIAC) snapped its five-game skid with a 3-2 eight-inning victory in its home finale against Saginaw Valley State University (19-22, 14-15 GLIAC).
#J.J. Ciennik# (Waterford, Mich./Mott) laced a double to left with two outs in the eighth inning of game two, scoring
Michael Wiseman (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland) from first base.
The Warriors, who had lost two close results including one in extra innings at SVSU on April 13, managed to avoid a season sweep in the home-and-home series with the Cardinals.
Wayne State will close out the regular season this weekend against Lake Erie College at Classic Park, the home of the Midwest League's Lake County Captains, in Eastlake, Ohio.
GAME ONE: SAGINAW VALLEY STATE 3, WAYNE STATE 1
The Cardinals scored all three of their runs off starter
Alex Pierse (Clinton Twp., Mich./De La Salle) in the third inning, benefitting from a pair of errors. Matt Hunt, who had three hits in the game, drove in two runs with a single. Later in the frame, Hunt scored on a two-out double by Kyle O'Boyle.
Pierse (4-3), who allowed only three hits the rest of the game, went the distance and totaled seven strikeouts with no walks.
His counterpart, Carson Beauchaine, also pitched a complete game, scattering six hits and two walks while fanning five. The lone WSU run came in the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly by #C.J. Maszal# (Allen Park, Mich.), which brought home
Ryan Buter (North Muskegon, Mich.).
GAME TWO: WAYNE STATE 3, SAGINAW VALLEY STATE 2 (8 INN.)
The score was tied at 2-2 from the third inning until the eighth, when Justin Drzewicki walked Wiseman with two outs, and subsequently gave up a walk-off double to Ciennik, who entered the game as a pinch hitter in the sixth.
Drzewicki (1-3) relieved starter Mike Saunders, who threw 142 pitches over seven innings and allowed just two runs on five hits, walking two and striking out six.
O'Boyle led the SVSU offense with three hits, as he drove in both Cardinal runs early in the game.
The Cardinals took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI double by O'Boyle. The Warriors grabbed their first lead of the day in the second on a two-run single by
Cameron Walker (Clinton Twp., Mich./De La Salle), but O'Boyle tied the game in the third with an RBI single.
Saunders engaged in a pitching duel with a combination of five Warrior hurlers.
Tyler Loehr (Brighton, Mich.),
Matt Rustulka (Windsor, Ont./Riverside) and
Billy Hurley (Mississauga, Ont./St. Aloysius Gonzaga) combined for five scoreless innings, allowing only two hits and a walk while striking out six.
Hurley, who worked out of a two-out jam in the top of the seventh, earned his third win of the season.
