Women's Tennis Wins GLIAC Tournament Championship Over Grand Valley State

The Warriors claimed their third consecutive tournament title on Sunday.

MIDLAND, Mich. -- It was a conclusion to a perfect season within the conference on Sunday for the Wayne State University women's tennis team (18-5 overall) as the Warriors notched a 4-0 shutout of Grand Valley State (13-9 overall) to win the GLIAC Tournament Championship inside the Greater Midland Tennis Center.

WSU completed the perfect effort after previously going 7-0 in the league to win the GLIAC Regular-Season Championship.  That made the Green and Gold the top seed for this weekend's event in Midland.  They squared off with the third-seeded Lakers after GVSU topped Ferris State 4-0 in Saturday's semifinal.

With the tournament captured for a third straight season (2022 and 2023), Wayne State will receive the automatic bid for the NCAA Tournament for a third consecutive year.

DOUBLES
After losing the doubles point in yesterday's semifinals contest with Saginaw Valley State, the Warriors reversed the trend and won two of the three matches to move ahead 1-0 early.

Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt) and Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland) earned a 6-1 win against Vasileia Griva and Rachel Sam at the second flight, while GVSU's No. 40-ranked Taylor Barrett and Neus Ramos defeated WSU's No. 18-ranked Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France) and Marta Komar (Inowroclaw, Poland) by that same score at the No. 1 position.

With each squad winning a match, that left the action over at the No. 3 spot.  In what required a tiebreaker to determine the winner, Dea Gorgidze (Tbilisi, Georgia) and Justine Beaulieu (Montreal, Que.) won 7-6 (7-5) over Estefania Hernandez and Vale Mozas to give WSU the match advantage.

Gorgidze and Beaulieu were playing with one another in doubles for the first time since the March 7 affair at Florida National.

SINGLES
The Warriors finished the shutout performance with triumphs in all three singles matches that saw a conclusion.

After falling in straight sets against SVSU, Ruyssen rebounded with wins of 6-2 and 6-3 to down Griva at the first flight.  The Warrior came into the contest as the No. 39-ranked singles player in the nation.

Arafat was next to finish with her 6-3, 6-4 victory vs. Barrett at the No. 2 position.  That triumph was the sophomore's 10th straight win in the category.

Also achieving her 10th consecutive win was Szpakowska, who clinched the championship for the Green and Gold with her 6-2, 6-3 triumph vs. Ramos at the No. 4 spot.

The other three matches all went unfinished after WSU made it to four points on the scoreboard.  Komar (6-4) against Soteras at the third flight and Gorgidze (6-3) vs. Sam at the fifth flight both won their opening sets, while Beaulieu (6-2) claimed her second set at the No. 6 position after dropping a 6-4 decision to Mozas in the first set.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will next look ahead to the NCAA Selection Show on Monday, May 6, at 8:30 p.m. to find out if it will host a regional for the second straight season.  The NCAA Midwest Regionals in women's tennis are scheduled for Friday, May 10, and Saturday, May 11, at the sites to be determined.
