Women's Basketball Downs Findlay for Lohr's 200th Wayne State Victory

The Warriors finished the home non-conference slate with a 71-46 win on Tuesday.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball team (8-2 overall) led from start to finish in securing a 71-46 triumph over visiting Findlay (5-6 overall) inside the Wayne State Fieldhouse in the final contest before the holiday break.  Carrie Lohr earned her 200th victory at Wayne State with the result, the only women's basketball head coach in program history to achieve the feat.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
WSU secured the game's first five points on a triple from redshirt senior guard Kate McArthur (Warren, Mich. / Cousino (Central Michigan)) and a driving layup from junior forward Shea Tripp (Jackson, Mich. / Michigan Center).  The Warriors gained a 10-point edge (13-3) after a layup by freshman guard McKenna Ferguson (Grandville, Mich. / Byron Center).  Wayne State would hold Findlay to just six points in the opening 10 minutes, while scoring 17 of their own.  Ferguson led the way with six, with Tripp tallying four and McArthur three in the opening stanza.

Second Quarter
A Ferguson triple and Thaya Luse (Elburn, Ill. / Example Academy) layup stretched the Warriors' lead to 16 (22-6) just 90 seconds into the new quarter.  Freshman guard Emily Homan (Haslett, Mich.) nailed a three-pointer with 5:26 remaining in the half, which forced the guests to call timeout.  UF notched the next five points following the break on a turn around shot by Alyssa Ziehler and a three-pointer from McKenna Stephens to close the deficit to 14 (32-18) with 3:58 left.  The Oilers scored just one more point over the final 3:29 before intermission.  Wayne State scored seven in that same span, including three from Homan, two from Luse, and two from redshirt senior guard Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.).

The Green and Gold defense held the visitors to just 26 percent (7-of-27) from the field in the first 20 minutes, while shooting 46 percent (15-of-33) themselves.

Third Quarter
Wayne State doubled up UF 8-4 in the first 4:23 of the new half.  McArthur and Kate Ellis then exchanged three-pointers on back-to-back possessions at the 4:43 and 4:18 marks, respectively.  The Oilers would close their deficit to 21 (50-29) following a layup and free throw by Addisyn Freeman to complete the old fashioned three-point play.  However, after Freeman's points with 3:44 left in the quarter, Findlay would not score again for the rest of the period.  WSU went on an 8-0 run in the final 3:23.  Tripp completed her own old fashioned three-point play as part of the stretch, with junior guard Alyssa Leister (St. Louis, Mich. / Alma) contributing a three pointer.

Fourth Quarter
The guests outscored the home team 17-13 in the final period, but the Warriors used their big lead to their advantage and closed out the 25-point triumph.  UF's span of over four minutes without scoring ended on a Stephens layup 41 seconds into the final quarter.  That would be the start of an 8-2 run for the Oilers between the 9:27 and 6:07 marks.  WSU's 13 points were spread out among five players.  Junior forward Ally Shagena (Fort Gratiot, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) led the way for the team with four points -- her first points of the contest.  Fugate added a triple, while Ferguson contributed a pair of points to close out the game with 15.

TEAM STATS
Wayne State shot 40 percent (27-of-68) from the field, compared to Findlay's 30 percent (18-of-61).  The Warriors made 10 of their 26 three-point attempts (39 percent) and held UF to just 14 percent (4-of-29) from beyond the arc.  Neither squad shot more than nine free throws.  The Oilers went 6-of-9 (67 percent) from the charity stripe, with WSU knocking down seven of its eight tries (88 percent).  Findlay out-rebounded the Green and Gold 45-42, but the Warriors had more assists (19 to 11), steals (8 to 4), and bench points (34 to 17).

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Ferguson led the squad with 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting.  Tripp contributed 11 points, including making all five of her free throw attempts.  She also had six assists and three steals to lead all players.  10 different Warriors found the scoresheet at the end of the game.

LEADING THE OILERS
Ziehler was the lone Oilers player to reach double figures, scoring a game-best 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting.  She added 12 rebounds for a double-double performance.  Janae Hoying dished out five assists.  Four different UF players secured a steal.
