Women's Basketball Hangs On To Defeat Ashland, 65-64

Warriors end 12-game losing streak to the Eagles.

DETROIT – The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (8-6 overall and GLIAC) ended a 12-game losing streak against Ashland University (8-6 overall and GLIAC) with a 65-64 triumph Tuesday evening at Matthaei.  The victory also snapped a seven-game home court losing skein to AU and moved the Warriors into a tie-for-fourth in the GLIAC standings with the Eagles.

FIRST HALF RECAP
Playing its final regular-season home game of the year, the Warriors started strong scoring 10 of the first 13 points with senior Tori Perez (Belleville, Mich.) scoring on a lay-up and a triple giving the hosts a 10-3 lead just over 3:30 into the contest.

After back-to-back hoops by Ashland, WSU went on a 9-0 run keyed by five points from junior Kate Sherwood (Canton, Mich. / Belleville).

The Eagles scored the next four points, but Wayne State responded with an 8-0 run that carried over into the second period.

A triple by freshman Jolee Houle (Zeeland, Mich. / Grand Haven) just over four minutes into the second quarter extended the Warrior advantage to 17 (30-13).

AU's Makenna Geiser scored the next five points and Erin Daniels drained a three-pointer to cut the WSU lead to nine (30-21) with just over four minutes left before intermission.

Perez scored on consecutive Wayne State possessions to increase the margin to 13 (34-21).  Ashland ended the opening half on a 7-2 run cutting the Warrior lead to eight (36-28) at halftime.

The Eagles held an 11-2 edge in points off turnovers in the opening 20 minutes as WSU had nine turnovers to just two miscues by AU.

SECOND HALF RECAP
Junior Sam Cherney (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) and Sherwood scored in the first 80 seconds of the third period pushing the lead to 12 (40-28).

WSU's lead remained between six and 10 points with Wayne State taking a 50-40 advantage with 4:08 left in the third quarter on a steal and fast-break lay-up by Sherwood.

That would be the Warriors last made field goal for over 10 minutes.

The Eagles concluded the period on an 8-2 run to pull within four (52-48) after 30 minutes.  Hallie Heidemann had two triples during the AU run.

Ashland knotted the score at 54-54 with 7:15 left on another shot from beyond the arc by Heidemann, then took its first lead of the game as a Karlee Pireu lay-up gave the visitors a 56-54 lead.

AU had a pair of four-point leads (58-54 and 60-56), before an 8-2 spurt by Wayne State regained the lead at 64-62.  Sophomore Kate McArthur (Warren, Mich. / Cousino) had a pair of triples sandwiched around a jumper by Sherwood.

Pireu made two foul shots with 1:47 left to tie the game at 64-64.  Both teams failed to score on its next possession, before Sherwood was fouled with 49.5 seconds left.  She made the first but the rebound on the second shot went out-of-bounds off an Eagle player.

Sherwood's lay-up attempt as the shot clock was winding down was blocked by Sydney Jacobsen.  Ashland called two timeouts in the final 16 seconds, but a last second shot by Pireu was blocked by Cherney preserving the win.
