SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The Wayne State University women's tennis team bested Lake Superior State, 7-2, on Sunday morning at the Arbuckle Student Activity Center. The Warriors have won the last four matches.
DOUBLES- Juniors
Lauren Hughes (Detroit, Mich. / Southfield) and
Ashley Walker (Canton, Mich. / Salem) defeated Laura Fernandez and Jenay Andrews, 8-2, at No. 2 doubles. The pair has won the last three doubles matches.
- Sophomore
Liz Ghellere (Ararangua, Brazil / Unificado) and freshman
Astrid Ciellza (Tecumseh, Ont. / St. Anne's S.S.) topped Kirsten Malpass and Allison Grandfield, 8-3, at the third doubles flight.
- New duo, senior
Alex Poissant (Lavel, Que. / Vanier Prep) and freshman
Dasha Kuznetsova (Moscow, Russia / Moscow School 45) lost to Sarah Awe and Tara Harvey in the first position.
SINGLES - Ciellza won in two sets, 6-0, 6-0, over Andrews at the fifth flight, while Ghellere defeated Fernandez at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-2.
- Hughes topped Grandfield, 6-3, 6-0, at the sixth position for her first GLIAC win and Kuznetsova bested Harvey, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 2 singles.
- Senior
Julia Kamenko (Toronto, Ont. / Vaughan S.S.) beat Laura Roberts in two close sets, 7-5, 7-5, at the third flight and Poissant lost to Awe in a tie breaker, 6-1 (6-2, 3-6), at the first position.
UP NEXT - The Warriors will play conference opponent Northwood on Tuesday in Midland, Mich. The match is set to begin at 2 p.m. WSU edged the Timberwolves, 5-4 last season.
