Historic season ends for SVSU in Sweet Sixteen loss

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University women's soccer team played a game in December for the first time with the Cardinals taking on Grand Valley State University in the program's first-ever appearance in the NCAA DII National Tournament Regional Final Friday in Allendale, Mich.

The No. 6 seeded Cardinals battled the defending national champion and No. 1 seed Lakers to a scoreless first half. GVSU broke through with a goal from GLIAC Offensive Player of the Year Greta DeLoach in the 57th minute and added an insurance goal in the 81st to take the contest 2-0.

The loss ends the season for the Cardinals with a record of 14-6-3, a program record for wins in a season.

Olivia Argeros made five saves including a couple of brilliant stops in the first half to keep the game scoreless. Argeros set a new program record for shutouts in a season with 12 for SVSU.

GVSU moves on to play in the national quarterfinals against Central Missouri University on Sunday.
