Warriors Win Battle Of Wayne States, 3-2

Sorenson fans five, picks up win in relief

SAVANNAH, Ga. - The Wayne State University baseball team (3-0) scored the game-winning run on a bases-loaded ground ball and defeated Wayne State (Neb.) College, 3-2, on Tuesday afternoon at the Armstrong Atlantic Invitational.

The Wildcats (4-2) surrendered a 2-0 lead in the late innings.  Kyle Vesey's (Brighton, Mich.) two-run single in the sixth tied the score, and Kyle Zimmerman's (Frankfort, Mich.) grounder to short with one out in the ninth allowed Vesey to score the winning run.

Jeff Sorenson (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson), who came on in the fifth inning in relief of Kirk Stambaugh (Sylvania, Ohio), picked up the victory.  Sorenson struck out a career-high five and allowed just one hit and one walk over 4.2 innings.

An RBI single by Mike Bisenius produced the Wildcats' first run in the third inning.  WSC doubled its lead on a bases-loaded walk in the fourth.

Vesey's base hit with two outs in the sixth plated Andrew Ciennik (Waterford, Mich./Mott) and Alex Trojan (Fenton, Mich./Hartland), and made it a 2-2 game.  Vesey would ignite the rally in the ninth as well, as his one-out single followed by consecutive walks to Ryan Buter (North Muskegon, Mich.) and J.J. Ciennik (Waterford, Mich./Mott) loaded the bases.

The Warriors will make their way down to Florida to play 10 games over an eight-day span, beginning Thursday at Rollins College.

NOTES
The two Wayne State institutions were meeting in baseball for the first time ever … it was the first Wayne State vs. Wayne State matchup in any sport since a basketball game in 1998 … WSU's two through five hitters went 6-for-15 and scored all three runs.
