Rapid Recap: Davenport 82, GCU 73

11/5/2019 8:27:00 PM

A streak of 16 consecutive Grand Canyon victories in home openers came to a shocking halt against an unlikely foil.

Davenport, which finished No. 12 in Division II last season, made 15 3-pointers and never let GCU have a lead in a 82-73 Panthers victory at GCU Arena.

The discrepancy in 3-point shooting was devastating to the Lopes, who only made 2 of 19 3-pointers with the early misses digging a hole they could not overcome. Meanwhile, Davenport led by as much as 16 because it shot 50 percent from 3-point range (15 for 30) and dominated bench scoring 37-6. A trio of Panthers players hit at least four 3-pointers while GCU was led by 22 points and 10 rebounds from junior guard Carlos Johnson.

Trailing 78-63 with 2:01 left, GCU went on a 10-0 run but ran out of time for any more of a rally.

Davenport oozed with confidence in the second half, especially after taking a 46-30 lead as a carousel of Panthers 3--point shooters offered answers for every dent the Lopes applied to the lead.

The Lopes created a night full of work for themselves by digging a 24-11 hole over the game's first 12 minutes. Davenport's confidence was built on GCU's early impatience offensively. The Lopes missed 12 of their first 13 shots with nearly every opportunity coming on the perimeter, including 0-for-6 shooting from 3-point range.

GCU slowly worked back into the game in a hurry, when Johnson found the range for seven consecutive points during a 10-0 run that closed the Lopes to within three points.
That surge did not discourage Davenport, which led 35-28 at halftime despite only shooting 40.6 percent from the field.
