Laker Tennis Drops Road Matches to Wayne State and Northwood this Weekend

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State University men's and women's tennis teams dropped their matches to the Warriors State Warriors on Friday, April 9 and the Northwood Timberwolves on Saturday, April 9 in back-to-back road Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) matches. The men's team fell to Wayne State by a final score of 6-1 and the Timberwolves by a 5-2 final score. The women's team dropped their match to Wayne State by a 7-0 final score and lost to the Timberwolves by a score of 6-1. 

Friday, April 8 vs. Wayne State:

The men's team gave up the doubles point to the Warriors as only the Lakers No. 3 pair of Krishan Taneja/Ali Sahibzada won their match. Taneja and Sahibzada won by a score of 6-4. In singles play, No. 1 Juho Kantola defeated Dom Spicer in three sets to earn a point for the Lakers. Kantola won the first set in a tiebreaker (7-6) and Spicer followed with a 6-4 win in the second set. Kantola won the third set by a score of 10-4 to clinch the win. The Warriors won the remaining five singles matches to post a 6-1 win.

Identical to the men's team, the Lakers dropped the doubles point to the Warriors with the team's third pair of Keegan Malpass and Claudia Sole winning the lone set for the women's team. Malpass and Sole recorded the doubles victory by a 6-3 score. In singles play, the Warriors won all six matches against the Lakers. In the No. 3 match, Milena Baigorria fell in three sets after winning the second set in a tiebreaker to force the decisive third set. Baigorria fell in the third set by a score of 10-2.

Saturday, April 9 vs. Northwood:

The Lakers men's team started strong against the Timberwolves as the team earned the doubles point after winning two of the three matches. The Lakers top pair of Juho Kantola and Aaron Osmond won by a 6-2 score while Krishan Taneja and Ali Sahibzada won by a 7-5 score. In singles play, Osmond was the only Laker to record a win in his match after posting scores of 6-2 and 7-5 against his Northwood opponent. 

In the women's match, the Timberwolves won two of three matches in doubles play to take the first point. The Lakers No. 2 pair of Muskaan Ranjan and Maddie Whip won their match by a 7-6 score. In single play, Whip earned the Lakers only point against the Timberwolves. The freshman won her match in three sets by scores of 6-4, 5-7 and 6-2. 

What's Next

The Lakers will return to their home court in Sault Ste. Marie next weekend for a pair of GLIAC matches on Friday, April 15 and Saturday, April 16. The Lakers will take on the Purdue Northwest Pride on Friday at 9:00 a.m. and the Davenport Panthers on Saturday at 9:00 a.m. Both matches will take place in the Arbuckle Student Activity Center in the Norris Center.
