DETROIT -- The first-place Wayne State university baseball team (14-6 overall, 6-2 GLIAC) won Sunday's series finale 8-1 vs. Parkside (0-15 overall, 0-8 GLIAC) to complete the four-game sweep and move the Warriors' winning streak to five. It's the first four-game GLIAC series sweep since WSU won four home games against Saginaw Valley State in March of 2018.
WSU used a 4-for-5 day from redshirt junior Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) and three strong pitching performances to collect the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
An error allowed redshirt junior Ryan Foley (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) to reach first base to start the bottom of the first inning. Foley would later score on UWP's second error of the inning.
Back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the third inning from DeLanoy and graduate student Michael MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Country Day / The Lawrenceville School) pushed the home advantage to 2-0. The Rangers got on the board with a run on a hit and two walks in the top of the fourth inning.
Senior Ryne Travis (Lockport, Ill. / Lockport Twp.) drove in a run in the bottom of the sixth inning and another scored on an error on the same play to give the Green & Gold a 4-1 lead. The Warriors broke the game open with four runs on three hits in the bottom of the eighth inning. Foley, senior Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.) and DeLanoy all drove in runs during the rally.
AT THE PLATE
DeLanoy powered WSU's offense with four hits (two doubles) and two RBI, while Foley went 2-for-5 with an RBI.
ON THE MOUND
Redshirt senior Jack Schmidt (Fishers, Ind. / Indianapolis Cathedral) (2-1) struck out four over four innings and allowed just one run before junior Chad Sommers (Jonesville, Mich.) worked an impressive four and a 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. He struck out four batters.
Redshirt junior Jacob Raymond (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica Eisenhower) recorded the final two outs of the afternoon.
