Women's Tennis Finishes Road Schedule With 6-1 Triumph at Michigan Tech

The Warriors won their 11th neutral or true road contest on Saturday.

HOUGHTON, Mich. -- Playing in its 14th and final match away from home in the regular season, the No. 13-ranked Wayne State University women's tennis team (15-3 overall, 3-1 GLIAC) claimed a 6-1 victory at No. 45-ranked Michigan Tech (7-5 overall, 4-1 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon at the Gates Tennis Center in Houghton.

DOUBLES
The Warriors snagged two of the three matches in doubles play, enough to earn the first point of the conference affair.

The third flight duo of Martyna Szpakowska (Gdnask, Poland) and Shanice Weekes (London, England) posted a 6-0 shutout of Neva Manas and Ewa Podulka.  The victory capped off a weekend where the two freshmen did not allow a set point to their opponents.

Giving the Warriors the opening point of the match were Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt) and Dea Gorgidze (Tbilisi, Georgia).  At the No. 2 spot, they handled Emily Cojocaru and Lauren Opalewski with a 6-1 score.

The No. 41-ranked doubles team of Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France) and Marta Komar (Inowroclaw, Poland) fell 6-4 to Dominika Bobik and Grace Eland at the first position.

SINGLES
WSU concluded the effort by registering five victories in singles action.

First to finish was Arafat at the third position.  She improved to 4-0 in GLIAC matches by recording a 6-3, 6-1 win over Podulka.

Ruyssen, the No. 25-ranked singles player, survived a tie-breaker against the No. 71-ranked Bobik at the first flight.  She earned a 7-6 (4) win in the opening set, before tallying a 6-1 win to grab the next point for WSU.

Michigan Tech scored the fourth point awarded, their only of the contest, at the No. 2 spot when Eland defeated Komar by scores of 7-6 (0) and 6-3.

Ahead 3-1 after doubles and three completed singles matches, the player to clinch the match was Gorgidze at the fourth spot.  The redshirt freshman shut-out Manas, 6-0, to begin her game, but fell 7-6 (2) in the next set to give each player a victory.  In the deciding final set, the Warrior emerged with a 6-3 triumph.

Weekes posted the same two scores as her teammate Arafat (6-3, 6-1) in downing Marina Fernandez at the No. 6 singles spot.  The freshman has won her last six completed matches (her contest at Lake Superior State went unfinished).

Szpakowska (6-1) and Cojocaru (7-5) split a pair of sets at the fifth flight to send the battle to a 10-point tiebreaker, where the Warrior closed out the afternoon with a 10-6 victory.
