Baseball Splits at SVSU on Saturday

The Warriors improve to 16-7 overall with a game two victory.

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- The Wayne State university baseball team (16-7 overall, 8-3 GLIAC) saw its six-game winning streak come to an end on Saturday as Saginaw Valley State (10-8 overall, 6-5 GLIAC) took game one 7-6 in walk-off fashion.  The Warriors bounced back in a big way to win game two 13-2.

GAME ONE (L, 6-7)
HOW IT HAPPENED
An error in the first inning allowed leadoff hitter Ryan Foley (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) to reach and another single plus a walk loaded the bases. Junior Davis Graham (Grosse Pointe, Mich. / Grosse Pointe South) sent a two-run single into center field to give WSU a 2-0 advantage.

The Cardinals broke through with four runs on two hits and two walks in the bottom of the third inning.  Martin Money did most of the damage with a three-run home run to center field.

The Warriors were quick to respond as senior Ryne Travis (Lockport, Ill. / Lockport Twp.) doubled to start the top of the fourth inning and freshman CJ Maury (Brampton, Ont. / Mayfield SS) followed with a single.  Junior Noah Miller (Macomb, Mich. / University Liggett) tied the game at 4-4 with a two-run double.  An error by the SVSU first baseman allowed Miller to score and give Wayne State a 5-4 lead.

SVSU tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning with a run on three hits.  However, a line-drive double play helped senior starter Nicholas O'Dea (Livonia, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central) minimize the damage.  WSU loaded the bases in the top of the sixth inning but were unable to push across the go-ahead run.

A leadoff single, a passed ball and an RBI single gave the Cards a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Redshirt junior Chris Tanderys (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) drew a leadoff walk to start the top of the seventh inning and was removed for pinch-runner Jacob Badalamenti (Clinton Twp., Mich. / Warren De La Salle) who advanced to third base on a throwing error by the pitcher.  A sac fly by Maury tied the game at 6-6.

WSU drew three walks in the top of the eighth inning but did not score before SVSU used two hits, including a walk-off RBI double to win the game 7-6.

AT THE PLATE
Travis finished 3-for-4 with a run scored, while redshirt junior Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) went 2-for-3 with a run scored.  Both Miller and junior Davis Graham (Grosse Pointe, Mich. / Grosse Pointe South) drove in two runs, a piece.

ON THE MOUND
O'Dea allowed four runs in four and 2/3 innings and struck out one batter.  Redshirt senior Jack Schmidt (Fishers, Ind. / Indianapolis Cathedral) (2-2) suffered the loss by allowing two runs (one earned) and punched out two.

GAME TWO (W, 13-2)
HOW IT HAPPENED

Graduate student Michael MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Country Day / The Lawrenceville School) started the scoring in game two with an RBI single in the top of the first inning.  Travis and Tanderys both drove in runs to push the advantage to 3-0.

Wayne State hit two home runs in the top of the second inning to extend its lead to 6-0.  Foley connected for an inside-the-park homer to center before DeLanoy crushed a two-run home run to right field.  Redshirt sophomore Brett Zimmerman (Frankfort, Mich.) was hit by a pitch to start the top of the fourth inning and came around to score after a groundout and an SVSU error.  A sac fly by DeLanoy made it 8-0.  The rout continued with a two-run single from Travis and a two-run big fly by Tanderys.

An error in the top of the fifth inning pushed across the 13th run of the day for the Green & Gold.  SVSU answered with a run on a hit and an error in the bottom of the fifth inning. Two more hits plus two walks produced a run in the bottom of the sixth inning for the home team.  However, Fitzpatrick left the bases loaded with back-to-back strikeouts.

AT THE PLATE
DeLanoy went 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored , while Travis drove in three runs on two hits.  Tanderys also had a nice day at the plate, driving in three runs.

ON THE MOUND
Freshman Karter Fitzpatrick (Monroe, Mich. / Carleton Airport) (3-1) went all seven innings and allowed two runs (one earned) with eight strikeouts to collect his third win of the season.
