UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- Wayne State University men's basketball (7-16 overall, 6-12 GLIAC) played at Saginaw Valley State (9-17 overall, 5-13 GLIAC) on Thursday night and the Warriors dropped the road contest 72-59.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Warriors trailed 11-2 at the 17:43 mark after the Cardinals knocked down three early shots from behind the arc. Â A fast break layup from
Darian Owens-White (Ypsilanti, Mich. / River Rouge) snapped a 12-0 run by SVSU with 15:47 to play in the opening half.  The Cards continued to control the tempo and led 22-10 at the 12:40 mark.  A 20-foot jumper from
Latin Davis, Jr. (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Milan) brought the Warriors within 25-16 with 10:02 remaining and
Javon Henderson (Detroit, Mich. / University Prep) followed with a two-point bucket of his own, trimming the deficit to seven.  SVSU regained the momentum and led 31-18 at the 6:36 mark.  The home advantage grew to 39-20 with 4:07 left before halftime and SVSU went to the locker rooms holding onto a 48-29 lead.
The Warriors scored the first eight points of the second half to cut SVSU's lead to 48-37, forcing the Cards to take a timeout at the 16:22 mark.  SVSU once again led by 19, 57-39, with 12:56 to play.  Owens-White scored eight consecutive points to pull the Green & Gold within 12 at the 9:07 mark.  A driving basket from Davis kept Wayne State within striking distance at 66-51 with 7:37 left in regulation.  SVSU was able to control the remaining four minutes and win 72-59.

Davis tallied a team-high 21 points, while Henderson (14) and Owens-White (12) both finished in double figures.
LEADING THE CARDINALS
Darnell Hoskins, Jr. scored a game-high 24 points.  Sebastiano Lamonato poured in 15 points, while Fred John, Jr. chipped in 12 points.
TEAM STATS
SVSU out-shot WSU 54 percent (28-of-52) to 40 percent (22-of-55). Â The Cardinals connected on 11 triples compared to four for the Warriors. Â The rebounding battle was won by the home team 41-22, leading to 12 second-chance points from the Cards.

Wayne State will make its final in-state road trip of the regular season on Saturday, traveling to Northwood for a 6:00 p.m. contest in Midland.
