Eighth Inning Dooms Baseball in Series Opening Loss

Wayne State and UIndy will meet three more times this weekend.

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Wayne State University baseball program (3-2) returned to the diamond with a 5-3 loss at UIndy (4-3) on Friday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
UIndy struck first with a run on two hits and two walks in the bottom of the first inning.  Starter Nicholas O'Dea (Livonia, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central) did well to limit the damage and leave the bases loaded.  After Rudy Ramirez (Brighton, Mich.) singled and stole second to start the top of the second inning, Brett Zimmerman (Frankfort, Mich.) sent an RBI single through the left side to tie the game at 1-1.  The Greyhounds broke the tie in the bottom of second inning, powered by a walk and back-to-back singles, all with two outs.

Two UIndy errors and a wild pitch in the top of the fourth inning allowed the Green & Gold to tie the game at 2-2.  In the top of the fifth inning, singles from Noah Miller (Macomb, Mich. / University Liggett), Ryan Foley (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) and CJ Maury (Brampton, Ont.) loaded the bases for Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.) who drove in a run but grounded into a double play.

WSU looked poised to add on in the top of the eighth inning after Michael MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Country Day / The Lawrenceville School) was hit by a pitch and Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) singled into right field but back-to-back strikeouts stalled the momentum.  Indianapolis took advantage and strung together three hits plus a walk to tally three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to go up 5-3.  Foley drew a two-out walk in the top of the ninth inning but that would all of the offense for the Warriors.

AT THE PLATE
Foley led the way, going 2-for-3 with two walks and a stolen base.

ON THE MOUND
O'Dea allowed two runs in five innings on six hits and five walks, while striking out two batters.  Brennan Cox (Taylor, Mich. / Riverview Gabriel Richard) (0-1) was scoreless through two frames but was touched for three runs on three hits and a walk in his third inning of work.  The left-hander did strike out four batters.

UP NEXT
WSU and UIndy will play twice on Saturday with the first contest set for noon.
