Ostman Records 18 Points But Lakers Fall to Michigan Tech, 62-52

HOUGHTON, Mich. - The Lake Superior State women's basketball team fell to Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) rival Michigan Tech on Thursday night in Houghton, Mich. by a final score of 62-52.

The Lakers got off to a strong start against the Huskies, scoring the game's first five points. Michigan Tech would respond with five unanswered points of their own to even the game in the first quarter. Yet, the Lakers would not let the game stay tied for long as the team would score eight straight points, led by five points from Rebecca Villanueva to take a 13-5 lead into the second quarter. 

Abigail Ostman would score the Lakers first points of the second quarter when she made a three-point jump shots at 8:44 to put the Lakers ahead 16-11. The Huskies would begin to pull away from the Lakers as the team went on a 12-point scoring run to take a 24-16 lead over the Lakers. Ostman would sink her second three-pointer of the quarter to bring the Lakers closer to evening up the score and the half would end with Lake State trailing by four, 27-23.

Early in the third quarter, the Lakers would even the game at 27 when Mattison Rayman netted a layup. After falling behind by seven points, Ostman would make three straight free throw attempts to bring the Lakers within four points. With 1:30 left in the third quarter, the Huskies would take a double-digit lead for the first time in the game, going by 13 points at one point (46-33). 

Down by 11 points at the start of the fourth quarter, the Lakers comeback attempt was led by Ostman who scored seven straight points for her team. Despite Ostman's effort, the Lakers were unable to hold off the Huskies offense as Tech held a 10-point lead with 2:30 left to play.The game ended with the Huskies taking the conference game by a final score of 62-52. 

Ostman finished the game with a career-high 18 points on a 50.0 shooting percentage while also adding five rebounds and two blocks against the Huskies. Lexie Khon scored 12 points in the game which was second to Ostman. Rayman continued her solid defensive play as she secured 10 rebounds in the game for the Lakers.

Following Saturday afternoon's game against Northern Michigan at 3:00 p.m., the Lakers will return home for a pair of conference games on Thursday, Jan. 23 against Purdue Northwest at 5:30 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 25 against Wisconsin Parkside at 1:00 p.m. in the Bud Cooper Gymnasium. Thursday's game will include a halftime ceremony recognizing the Laker student-athlete who earned a GPA of 3.0 or higher during the fall semester. Mascot day will be held at the Laker basketball games on Saturday.
