Women's Tennis Sweeps Purdue Northwest in Season Opener

The Warriors won 7-0 in their first match of the year at PNW.

HAMMOND, Ind. -- The Wayne State University women's tennis squad (1-0 overall, 1-0 GLIAC) blanked Purdue Northwest (1-2 overall, 0-1 GLIAC) in Pride territory, 7-0, in its first match of the season on Saturday.

DOUBLES RESULTS

Freshman Sabrina Laynes (Saginaw, Mich. / Heritage) and sophomore Carla Jewell (Hobart, Ind.) were first off the courts after shutting out Anna Wachowski and Carolina Yepez, 6-0, at the third flight.

At No. 2 doubles, juniors Khadija Da-Silva (Burlington, Ont.) and first-year player Teodora Radu (Ramnicu Valcea, Romania) topped Olivia Kjaer and Julia Yanes-Barrera, 6-3.

Sophomore Laura Cazacu (London, England) and junior Linda Liong (Tanjung Kidurong, Malaysia) were last off the courts after winning their No. 1 doubles match 6-3 against Lena van Bergen and Patricia Dizon.

SINGLES RESULTS

Da-Silva was first to finish her match, nearly sweeping Dizon at No. 3 singles (6-0, 6-1).

At No. 1 singles, Cazacu was next off the courts after edging van Bergen (6-3, 6-1).

Laynes secured the Warrior win after notching her first collegiate victory against Yepez at No. 4 singles (6-1, 6-1).

At No. 6 singles, junior Stephanie Stamate (Windsor, Ont.) nearly blanked Kelli Canul (6-1, 6-0).

Liong notched a victory over Kjaer at No. 2 singles (6-4, 6-2).

Jewell was last off the courts after winning her No. 5 singles match against Yanes-Barrera (6-3, 6-2).

"It was a beautiful, sunny day which was great for our season-opening match," comments head coach Sheila Snyder.  "After three weeks of playing each other in practice, it was a really good first match to get our feet wet."

UP NEXT

Wayne State travels to Davenport on Sunday, Sept. 15, for a 10:00 a.m. match against the Panthers.
