Women's Tennis Rebounds With 4-1 Triumph at Lake Superior State

The Warriors begin their final weekend of road matches with a win.

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. -- After dropping its most recent match in close fashion, the No. 13-ranked Wayne State University women's tennis squad (14-3 overall, 2-1 GLIAC) rebounded with a 4-1 defeat of Lake Superior State (1-11 overall, 0-4 GLIAC) at the Student Activity Center in Sault Ste. Marie on Friday afternoon.

The two teams played to clinch, meaning that the first team to four points won the overall match.

DOUBLES
The Green and Gold started off impressively, winning all three doubles matches while allowing just five total points in the process.

The first to finish were the duo of Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland) and Shanice Weekes (London England).  They posted a 6-0 shut-out of Riley Gilman and Martina Oviedo at the No. 3 spot. The victory marked the 10th doubles win for the two first-year players as a pair this season.

Finishing next with a win (and clinching the first point of the afternoon for the Warriors) were Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt) and Dea Gorgidze (Tbilisi, Georgia), who downed Madelin Harrod and Julia Fraile Raton by a 6-1 score at the second spot.

Wrapping up doubles action with their 6-4 win were the No. 41-ranked doubles team of Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France) and Marta Komar (Inowroclaw, Poland) at the first flight.  The two posted their first victory together in doubles since the March 13 match at Palm Beach Atlantic.

SINGLES
By winning three of the four completed singles matches, WSU clinched their 14th victory of the season.

Komar, Arafat, and Gorgidze were all winners from the No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4 spots, respectively.  Gorgidze notched the second point for the team with her 6-2, 6-4 win over Oviedo.  Komar also earned a victory in straight sets, but after winning the opening set 6-2 against Valentina Parodi, she needed a tie-breaker to finish the job.  The junior registered a 7-6 (4) triumph in the final set.

With the third singles win and fourth WSU point, Arafat sealed the match.  It was a comeback effort for the freshman, who dropped the opening set by a 6-3 score to Fraile Raton.  The Warrior would show resilience and rattle off wins of 6-3 and 6-0 in the final two sets to emerge with the victory at the third flight.

Ruyssen fell by scores of 7-5 and 6-3 at the top flight.  She entered the day as the No. 25-ranked singles player in the nation.

Since Wayne State wrapped up the afternoon after just four singles matches, the action went unfinished at the fifth and sixth spots.  Neither match went very far, as Szpakowska was ahead 5-0 in the first set of her match against Gilman, while Weekes was ahead 1-0 against her opponent, Harrod.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will play its final road contest of the regular season on Saturday, when they visit No. 45-ranked Michigan Tech.  The GLIAC affair is slated to begin around 2 p.m., after the men's match against the Huskies.
