Bentley Drops Two during Day 1 of UIndy Invitational

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – After taking the first two sets in convincing fashion, the Bentley University women's volleyball team dropped the next three to fall to the University of Indianapolis, 3-2, Friday night during the UIndy Invitational at the Ruth Lilly Center.

It was the second loss of the day for the Falcons, who were swept by Grand Valley State, 3-0, in an afternoon match.

Against UIndy, Bentley jumped on top by taking the first, 25-19, and the second, 25-15. Senior Ingrid Murphy (Cotuit, Mass./Barnstable HS) had four kills in the opening set and five, along with four aces, in the second.

The only one of the final three sets that was close was the third, which ended 25-23. After an ace from graduate student Amanda Parker (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North HS) brought Bentley within one at 22-21, the Greyhounds scored the next two and went on to prevail 25-23.

Five aces helped UIndy (4-1) take the fourth, 25-16, and the home team closed the fifth an 8-2 run for a 15-8 victory.

Junior Ellie Wheeler (Olathe, Kans./Saint James Academy) led Bentley with 15 kills, 16 aces and a .325 hitting percentage. Murphy followed with 14 kills and five aces, and junior Natalie Thom (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS), a transfer from UIndy, had 29 assists and 10 digs for Bentley.

The Falcons, who hit .309 in the first three sets and .084 in the final two, also received 10 kills, 21 assists, seven digs and two aces from Parker.

In the 25-14, 25-22, 25-22 loss to 4-1 Grand Valley State, Wheeler led Bentley with 10 kills and sophomore libero Jazzy Burke (Lake George, N.Y./Lake George Central HS) had 12 digs and three aces.
