SVSU earns season sweep of Northwood with 78-54 win

MIDLAND, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's basketball team earned its third straight Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win, cruising past rival Northwood University on Saturday in Midland, Mich.

With the score 21-19 in favor of SVSU with under six minutes to go in the first half, the Cardinals went on a 12-2 run and led 38-27 at the break. The Cardinals extended their lead throughout the second half and cruised to a 78-54 win to sweep the season series for the second straight campaign.

SVSU moves to 15-7 overall and 9-5 in the GLIAC.

How it Happened:

  • Freddie McIntosh put the Cardinals up 16-9 midway through the first half with a layup.
  • After the Timberwolves cut the deficit to two points, SVSU went on a 12-2 run to open a 12-point lead.
  • Delano Smith hit a pair of 3-pointers in the final minutes of the first half and led 38-27 at the break.
  • Tyrik Singh drilled a 3-pointer with just under 10 minutes to play to balloon the SVSU lead to 25 points.

Inside the Box Score:

  • Four Cardinals scored in double digits led by a season-high 21 points from Freddie McIntosh. He added eight rebounds.
  • Tyler Witz finished with 20 points on 10-of-11 shooting.
  • Tre Garrett recorded 13 points, while Delano Smith scored 12 points and had eight rebounds.
  • Steven Post had a team-high nine rebounds in 13 minutes off the bench.
  • The Cardinals shot 35-of-61 from the field, 4-of-17 from deep, and 4-of-7 at the line.
  • Christian Smith led Northwood with 14 points.
