MIDLAND, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's tennis team opened the 2021 spring season against Hillsdale College Saturday at the Greater Midland Tennis Center.

The match ended at 5-0 after Hillsdale clinched the win. The match was agreed to be halted after the outcome was determined.

SVSU Highlights:

  • The No. 3 doubles team of Gyselle Daza Gutierrez and Adiya Young won their match 6-3.

  • Prior to the match being halted, Nicole Johnson was locked in a three-set match at No. 3 singles. After dropping the first set, Johnson took the second 6-2 and led the third 4-3.

  • Adiya Young led her match at No. 6 singles 7-6 (3), 2-1.

"It was great to be out on the court again," first-year SVSU Head Coach Ryan Ruzziconi said. "The nervous energy, the rust, and our youth showed up today against a good team in Hillsdale. We had a number of unforced errors that came back to haunt us in several close matches. That said, I was happy with how we battled and fought point-to-point. We grinded out points and started to put our plan into place in our matches. We know the first half of the season will be this roller-coaster as we get back into match play again. Lots of positives out there today."
