Ferris State's Postseason Tennis Run Ends In D2 Midwest Regional Final

Video Highlights & Interview

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's tennis squad had its postseason run come to an end on Sunday (May 12) as the Bulldogs suffered a 4-0 setback to top-seeded host Indianapolis in the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Championship match at the UIndy Tennis Center in Indianapolis.

The fourth-seeded Bulldogs, who rallied for a 4-3 win over fifth-seeded Lewis (Ill.) in NCAA action on Saturday (May 11) at Center Grove High School in the Indianapolis area, battled the nationally-ranked Greyhounds in several tight matches but could not pull out the win.

Indianapolis captured a 6-3 win at one doubles before FSU came back with a 6-4 triumph from the pairing of Mathis Guerre and Pablo Munoz Baroja at the second flight. However, UIndy managed a close 6-4 win at three doubles to take the initial point of the match into singles play.

In singles action, the Greyhounds earned hard-fought wins in the opening set at all six positions and then closed the match by taking wins at one, two and four singles. FSU had rallied on Saturday to beat Lewis by taking the final three matches on the court, but did not get the opportunity to do so again versus UIndy as the Greyhounds picked up the necessary points to seal the win and move on to the NCAA Division II Sweet Sixteen.

The Bulldogs had a trio of seniors play their final collegiate match in Steward Sell, Nur Adim Ramdani Iswan and Connor Douglas. Overall, they helped FSU to four consecutive regional finals in their collegiate career while Sell and Iswan were also key members of Bulldog teams that reached the D2 Final Four and D2 Elite Eight in 2016 and 2017, respectively.

The Bulldogs were making their 23rd all-time NCAA Tourney appearance and the squad's first under interim head coach Mark Doren this season.

Along with winning their opening match in the NCAA Tournament and reaching the regional championship match, the Bulldogs also earned runner-up honors in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tourney while making their fifth consecutive appearance in the league final this season.
