Slow Start Leads To 68-62 Setback To No. 7-Ranked Hillsdale

Owens-White leads four Warriors in double figures with 13 points.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's basketball squad (1-2 overall) concluded the non-conference portion of its regular-season schedule with a 68-62 loss to visiting Hillsdale College (3-1 overall) Saturday afternoon at the Wayne State Fieldhouse.  The Chargers were ranked seventh nationally in the NABC Preseason Coaches Poll released last month.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
Hillsdale scored the first nine points of the contest, before junior Avery Lewis (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron) drained a triple just over four minutes into the match.  HC increased its lead to nine (14-5) on three pointer by Noah Applegate, his only points of the game.  WSU responded with six consecutive points on shot from beyond the arc by senior Brailen Neely (Detroit, Mich. / Western International), and three straight free throws by Lewis.

The Chargers answered with a 10-0 spurt as Patrick Cartier had a pair of field goals sandwiched around triples by Jack Gohlke and Tavon Brown for a 13-point advantage (24-11) by the visitors.  The Wayne State deficit was 15 on two occasions (30-15 and 32-17) before an 11-0 run by the Warriors made it a four-point game at 32-28 with just under three minutes remaining in the opening half.  Sophomore Mike Robinson (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Ann Arbor Huron) had five points during the comeback.  Each squad scored five points over the final 2:30 before intermission giving Hillsdale a 37-33 lead at the break.

Second Half
HC scored the first six points after halftime to open a 10-point margin (43-33), prior to a Neely jumper.

Nearing the mid-point of the second half, Wayne State was within four (50-46) after a 9-0 spurt keyed by seven consecutive points by senior Darian Owens-White (Detroit, Mich. / River Rouge) and concluding with an offensive rebound and put-back by freshman David Hughes (Southfield, Mich. / Detroit Edison Public School Academy).

The Warrior deficit grew to nine (55-46) following five straight points by the Chargers.  WSU trailed by 11 (64-53) with 3:19 remaining before a four-point play by Robinson (a triple and a free throw) preceded a Robinson steal that led to two foul shots by Owens-White.  Neither team scored for the next 75 seconds, before Neely split a pair from the charity stripe to make it a four-point game at 64-60.

Hillsdale's Kyle Goessler made all four of his free throws in the final 40 seconds to seal the road win for the Chargers.

TEAM STATS
Wayne State shot 38 percent (21-of-56) from the floor, compared to 44 percent (27-of-61) for HC.  WSU was 6-of-15 (40 percent) from beyond the arc, while the Chargers were 6-of-19 (32 percent).  The Warriors made 14 of their 17 foul shots (82 percent) with Hillsdale connecting on 8-of-11 (73 percent) from the charity stripe.  Wayne State had a slight 38-35 edge in rebounding.
