Women's Basketball Falls to Michigan Tech on the Road

HOUGHTON, Mich. - The Lake Superior State women's basketball team recorded a 61-46 loss against the Michigan Tech Huskies on Friday, Jan. 22 in the SDC Gymnasium in Houghton, Mich. in the first game of a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) series. 

 First Half: 

The Lakers and Huskies would play a tight first half with the two teams separated by just one point at half time (20-21 MTU). 

Sadie DeWildt and Mackenzie Bray would start off strong for the Lakers as each player scored five of the team's first ten points in the game. Bray scored on a layup and a three pointer while DeWildt added two points on a jump shot and followed with a three-point jump shot to give the Lakers a 10-5 lead over the Huskies with 7:21 remaining in the first quarter. 

Michigan Tech would respond and with 2:49 left in the opening quarter, the Huskies held a 12-10 lead over the Lakers. The first ten minutes of play would close with the Lakers behind by two points, 14-12. 

Mattison Rayman would tie the game at 14 with a layup early in the second quarter and spark the Lakers to a run of six straight points. Hailey Voelker would score on two free throw attempts and Taylor Bryant would score on a jump shot to give the Lakers an 18-14 lead. 

The first half would close with the Huskies holding a one point lead over the Lakers (21-20). 

Second Half: 

Michigan Tech had a strong third quarter, scoring 24 points while the Lakers posted 12 points. LSSU opened the second half strong as Bray made a three pointer to give the Lakers a two point lead (23-21). The Huskies offense then took over, outscoring the Lakers 10-1 in the next two minutes to build a seven point lead over the Lakers (31-24). 

Rayman would stop the Huskies run with a three-pointer to bring the Lakers back within four points and Bryant would add a layup to keep the score close (31-29). The final six minutes of the quarter was all Michigan Tech with the home team scoring 14 of the final 17 points in the quarter. 

In the final quarter, the Lakers were led by Bray who had seven points. Bray scored the Lakers first seven points of the quarter. Despite a close first half between the two Upper Peninsula rivals, the Lakers could not hold off the Husky offense in the second half. Michigan Tech would record the win by a final score of 61-46. 

Breaking Down the Game:

Bray led the way for the Lakers with 15 points in the game,  as she went 6-for-14 and scored on three of her six three point attempts. Rayman ranked second on the Lakers in the game with seven points while recording a team-leading 12 rebounds in the game. 

The Lakers finished the game with a 32.1 shooting percentage, going 17-for-53 against Michigan Tech. On the other end of the court, the Huskies went 25-for-66 in the game to total a 37.9 shooting percentage. Lake Superior was outrebounded by Michigan Tech, 42-36, in the game.

The Lakers and the Huskies will wrap up the series season tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m. in the SDC Gymnasium in Houghton, Mich.
