Softball Splits With #14-Grand Valley State

Warriors won the nightcap 3-2, after falling 6-3 in the opener.

DETROIT – The Wayne State University softball squad (16-12 overall, 9-11 GLIAC) split a home doubleheader with 14th-ranked Grand Valley State University (29-7 overall, 20-4 GLIAC) on Saturday at Gary L Bryce Field.  GVSU won the opener 6-3, before the Warriors held on for a 3-2 triumph in the nightcap.

GAME ONE RECAP
WSU scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first as senior middle infielders Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) and Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.) led off the frame with back-to-back singles.  Psenicka advanced to third on a fielding error in the outfield, while Kressler moved into scoring position on a ground out.  A one-out ground out by senior Brooke Turkalj (St. Jacobs, Ont.) produced the game's first run.

The Lakers scored five times in the top of the fourth on two walks, a throwing error, and back-to-back doubles by Bailey Thatcher (2-RBI) and Megan Koenigshof (RBI), with the last run scoring on a sacrifice fly by Taylor Rieger.

Grand Valley State extended its lead in the top of the sixth on a one-out single by Joanna Cirrincione, a walk to Rieger and an RBI single by Nikoma Holmen.

Wayne State tried to rally in the bottom of the sixth.  Kressler was robbed on a great running catch by Thatcher to start the inning.  Sophomore Brooke Nadolny (Clinton Twp., Mich. / L'Anse Creuse) singled and Turkalj was hit by a pitch.  Senior Amy Claydon (Cambridge, Ont.) followed with an RBI single, with WSU's third run scoring on a fielder's choice.

IN THE CIRCLE
Freshman Alexis Bonk (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon) started and pitched the first three-plus innings, then returned to the mound in the seventh to retire three of the four batters she faced.  For the game, Bonk (2-3) allowed two runs (one earned) in four innings without allowing a hit.  She struck out four and walked four.

Junior Paige Ameel (Marysville, Mich.) pitched three innings and surrendered four runs (three earned) on six hits and three walks.

Hannah Beatus (14-2) went the distance for GVSU limiting the Warriors to three runs (one earned) on six hits.  She struck out six and did not walk a batter.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Six different WSU batters had a single each.

LEADING THE LAKERS
Cirrincione had two hits and a run scored, while Thatcher reached twice on a double and a walk.

GAME TWO RECAP
Wayne State grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Psenicka had a leadoff single and Kressler smacked a 2-0 offering over the left field fence for her fourth home run of the season.

Grand Valley State pulled within a run in the second on a walk, a single by Hannah Hollister and a hit by pitch to load the bases.  A sacrifice fly by Thatcher preceded a double play.

WSU regained a two-run lead (3-1) in the fourth.  Senior Emily Dodge (Burlington, Ont.) had a leadoff single with pinch-runner Abby Favela (Riverside, Ill. / Riverside-Brookfield) moving to second on a walk to senior Rose Myers (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester).  A sacrifice bunt by freshman Shelby Miller (Georgetown, Ont.) advanced both runners.  Psenicka followed with an RBI ground out to make it 3-1.

In the fifth, Cirrincione drew a leadoff walk, went to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a two-out double by Holmen.

Claydon retired the final seven Laker batters after Holmen's double to preserve the 3-2 victory.
