Volleyball Rebounds to Dispatch Parkside in Four Sets

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University volleyball team (11-6, 5-4 GLIAC) beat Parkside (7-10, 2-7 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon inside the Matthaei in four sets.  The Warriors won won set one 25-15, set two 25-23 and set four 25-22.

HOW IT HAPPENED
A service ace from Maddie Morrison (Flushing, Mich.) early in the opening set made it 4-1.  The set was tied at 7-7 when the Warriors took control.  WSU won four consecutive points to take an 11-7 lead powered by an ace by Lauren VanderWal (Caledonia, Mich.) and a kill by Kayla Giroux (Flat Rock, Mich.).  Halle Shell (Port Huron, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) gave the Green & Gold an 18-12 advantage with a spike before VanderWal added another kill.  VanderWal continued to have the hot hand and her back-to-back points made it 22-13.  Wayne State would win 25-15 on a kill by Alexa Withun (Troy, Mich. / Athens).

WSU led 5-4 after two straight points by VanderWal to start the second set.  A combo block by VanderWal and Giroux made it 8-5.  The Rangers led 15-13 midway through the set.  Giroux notched two kills to to even the score at 18-18.  UWP led 22-19 but the Warriors would come back to tie the game at 22-22.  The Green & Gold trailed 23-22 but won the next three points to win the set 25-23 and go up 2-0.

Parkside set the tone early in the third set and led 6-2.  The Rangers held onto a 10-5 and a 13-6 advantage.  WSU used a kill and an ace by Morrison to trim the deficit to two, 14-12.  The visitor lead grew to 21-15 as UWP would force a fourth set by winning 25-19.

Morrison and Shell teamed up for a block to give Wayne State an 8-3 lead to start the fourth set.  The game was tied at 12-12, 13-13 and 15-15.  A point by Morrison and a Rangers' error gave WSU a 20-18 lead,  Parkside tied the set at 21011 but the Warriors won four of the final five points to take the set 25-22 and the match 3-1.  VanderWal ended the match with a kill.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
VanderWal led the team with 14 kills, while Giroux hit .450 and had 11 kills to go with Shell's 10 kills.  Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.) dished out 38 assists, while Maddy Benoit (Farmington, Mich. / Mercy) finished with 22 digs.

ONE BIG THING
In a tightly contested match, the WSU defense proved to be the difference, totaling nine blocks.

Wayne State will travel to the Upper Peninsula for key GLIAC matches at Northern Michigan on Friday and Michigan Tech on Saturday.
