Women's Tennis Crowned Regular-Season Champions

The Warriors went undefeated in GLIAC matchups.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's tennis squad (9-0 overall, 9-0 GLIAC) clinched the regular-season title after sweeping Ferris State (6-3 overall, 6-3 GLIAC), 7-0, at home on Sunday.

WSU won 57 of the 63 possible league points this year.  The Green and Gold previously finished first in the GLIAC five years ago.  Prior to that, WSU claimed the conference title in 1982.


DOUBLES RESULTS

Sophomore Laura Cazacu (London, England) and junior Linda Liong (Tanjung Kidurong, Malaysia) blanked Agata Klak and Isabela Paixao, 6-0, at No. 1 doubles.

At No. 2 doubles, juniors Khadija Da-Silva (Burlington, Ont.) and Teodora Radu (Ramnicu Valcea, Romania) tallied a 6-3 win against Silvia Verebes and Brittany Lavenant.

Freshman Sabrina Laynes (Saginaw, Mich. / Heritage) and junior Irena van Meer (Amsterdam, Netherlands) fell 6-3 to Sam Stephenson and Morgan Waller at the third flight.

SINGLES RESULTS

Da-Silva was first off the courts after winning her No. 3 singles match vs. Verebes (6-0, 6-2).

At No. 1 singles, Cazacu notched a victory over Paixao (6-3, 6-4).

Sophomore Carla Jewell (Hobart, Ind.) put it away after a tight first set against Stephenson (7-5, 6-0).

At No. 4 singles, Radu tallied a win versus Lavenant (7-5, 6-3).

Laynes won her No. 5 singles match against Waller (6-2, 6-3).

Liong won her No. 2 singles match in a third set vs. Klak (6-1, 5-7, 6-2).

"We beat a very good Ferris State team today," commented head coach Sheila Snyder.  "It was probably one of our best overall performances of the fall.  I love the growth and grit that I have seen from our team thus far.  Every single person has contributed to our success and the support that they have for one another is truly special.  We are looking forward to the tournament this weekend."

UP NEXT

The Warriors will be seeded first in the 2019 GLIAC Tournament, which begins in Midland, Mich. on Friday, Oct. 25th.  The Warriors will play Purdue Northwest in the quarterfinals at 6:45 p.m.
