Men's Tennis Captures GLIAC Championship With Win at Northwood

The Warriors won all nine matches.

MIDLAND, Mich. -- The Wayne State University men's tennis team (19-4 overall, 7-0 GLIAC) capped off an impressive regular season by defeating Northwood (8-13 overall, 3-4 GLIAC) 7-0 on Saturday afternoon at Midland Tennis Center.  With the victory, the Warriors claimed the GLIAC regular-season championship.  It is the program's first league title since 2018-19.  

SINGLES
The Green and Gold didn't take long in singles, as just one match went to three sets.  At the top spot, Dom Spicer (London, England) was strong, posting a 6-2, 6-1 win.  Spicer's match clinched the title for WSU. 

Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany) bumped up to No. 2 singles and had no trouble.  He defeated his opponent, 6-2, 6-3. 

At No. 3 singles, Niklas Karcz (Bottrop, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany) was dominant, earning a 6-2, 6-0 victory. 

Daniel Grey (Wiesbaden, Germany) played at No. 4 singles, where he collected a 6-1, 6-2 win. 

In the No. 5 spot, Luke Laws (Sunderland, England) was able to pull out a 6-0, 6-2 victory. 

Finally, at No. 6 singles, Joe Steele (Beverly Hills, Mich. / U. of Detroit Jesuit) entered the lineup and recorded a 6-7 (4), 6-3, 10-6 win. 

DOUBLES
Wayne State had no trouble in doubles, as all three matches went the Warriors' way .  Drenth and Grey posted a 6-3 victory in the top doubles spot.

Spicer and Laws were impressive, as the duo collected a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles. 

At No. 3 doubles, Karcz and Ben Lakeman (Penzance Cornwall, England) earned a 6-2 victory.

"The GLIAC Championship, it's been a few years.  As a coach, this is my second regular-season GLIAC Championship, and I'm really proud of this group of guys for buying in to what we're doing," coach Bryan Morrow said. 

UP NEXT
The Warriors will take part in the GLIAC Tournament, which will take place at Midland Tennis Center from April 29-May 1.
