Volleyball Ends Crossover with a Five-Set Win

HAMMOND, Ind. -- The Wayne State University volleyball program (15-5 overall) finished play at the 2021 Midwest Regional Crossover with a five-set thrilling win over Ohio Dominican (11-10 overall) on Saturday afternoon.  The Warriors won set two (25-17, set four (25-17) and set five (15-9).

HOW IT HAPPENED
WSU led 6-4 to open the first set but ODU used a 6-0 rally, taking an 11-7 advantage.  An ace from Halle Shell (Port Huron, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) tied the set 15-15 and a kill from Maddie Morrison (Flushing, Mich.) made it a one-point game, 22-21.  The Panthers took the opening set 25-22.

Jenna Kray (Westerville, Ohio / Worthington Christian) staked the Warriors to a 6-5 lead early in the second set.  That advantage grew to 12-8 and 18-9.  During the 9-1 run, Taylor Wagner (St. Joseph, Mich. / Lakeshore) collected a pair of kills.  An ODU error made it 23-14 before Wayne State used a kill from Shell and another Panther error to win the set, 25-17.

The Panthers led set three 7-4 and 11-8.  The Green & Gold answered and led 16-14 before a 5-0 Panthers run gave ODU a 19-16 lead.  The Panthers would go on to win 25-18.

The fourth set was tied at 6-6 after a point by Morrison.  The Warriors went ahead 13-8 on a 7-1 run, which was powered by two kills from Alex Withun (Troy, Mich. / Athens).  The Green & Gold led 20-12, 24-15 and would win 25-17 to force a fifth set.

Wayne State never trailed in the decisive set and Wagner put the Warriors on top 6-1.  Two Panther errors made it 10-5.  Points by Morrison and Shell stretched WSU's lead to 12-7.  ODU trimmed its deficit to 12-9 but a kill from Withun and back-to-back services aces Julia Malewicz (Macomb, Mich. / Utica Academy for International Studies / Henry Ford II) ended the set and gave the Warriors a 15-9 victory en route to a 3-2 match win.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Wagner posted a double-double with 14 kills and 19 digs, while Withun tallied 11 kills.  Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.) finished with 37 assists and 13 digs.

HEAD COACH THOUGHTS
