Cards get back on track with 71-57 victory over Warriors

DETROIT -- The Cardinal Men's Basketball team hit the road for a GLIAC tilt at Wayne State University on Thursday (Jan. 23) night. Saginaw Valley was solid throughout the contest, leading wire-to-wire to claim a 71-57 victory over the Warriors. 

The Cards improve to 12-6 overall and 6-4 in the GLIAC while the Warriors fall to 4-10 and 1-9 in league play. 

SVSU led throughout the entire first half and by as many as nine points when Delano Smith hit a triple at the 12:52 marker to put the score at 17-8. Another nine point lead came as the opening half came to an end with Myles Belyeu hitting a three-pointer to give the visitors a 33-24 edge heading into the halftime break. 

Malik Ellison had a game-high 10 points in the first half with three rebounds while Belyeu added nine first half points and a half-best five boards. 

The second half saw the visitors continue the strong play to maintain a solid lead over Wayne State. The Cardinals led by as many as 17 points, which came when Belyeu made a layup with 1:51 left in the contest to put SVSU up by a score of 68-51. 

In the end, Saginaw Valley closed-out for the 14-point victory by a final score of 71-57.

Inside the Boxscore

  • Ellison was named the Meijer "Player of the Game" after scoring a game-high 22 points, adding five rebounds, three steals and a pair of assists. 
  • Belyeu added 20 points with seven boards, two assists and a steal.
  • Smith netted 10 points and added three rebounds and a trio of steals.
  • Darnell Hoskins Jr. chipped-in with nine points in the victory.
