The Malone University volleyball team suffered a pair of three-set defeats on Friday at the sixth annual GLIAC/GLVC Crossover Tournament in Aurora, Illinois.Â
The Pioneers, seeded 11th among the GLIAC's 16 teams, opened the afternoon with a 20-25, 23-25, 21-25 defeat to the 12th-seeded GLVC squad, McKendree (IL) University. Malone then faced off with the No. 10 GLVC seed, the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, later in the evening, falling by scores of 11-25, 17-25 and 15-25.
Overall, the GLVC won 13 of the 24 matches on day one. The Pioneers, now 9-12 overall, will wrap up play at the event on Saturday afternoon with a 1:00 p.m. CDT (2:00 p.m. EDT) contest against the GLVC's #16 seed, Maryville (MO) University.
Against McKendree, outside hitter
Taylor Slauterbeck paced the Malone attack with 10 kills, 11 digs and two service aces. Middle hitters
Lauren Townley and
Elizabeth Maczuzak followed with seven and six kills, respectively. Setter
Brianna Clegg also made solid contributions, handing out 13 assists and scooping up 11 digs.
In Friday's finale against UW-Parkside, Slauterbeck totaled six kills and a team-high 10 digs. Townley also tallied six kills with a service ace and two block assists while setter
Kimberly McCracken chipped in with 10 assists and eight digs.
