DETROIT -- The Wayne State University volleyball program (8-4 overall, 3-1 GLIAC) swept Lake Superior State (1-11 overall, 0-4 GLIAC) on Friday night by scores of 25-22, 25-23, 25-21.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Warriors led 6-4 early in the first set after two LSSU attacking errors and a kill from
Olivia Fike (North Branch, Mich.). Â
Madelyn Krenz (Chenoa, Ill. / Prairie Central) and
Grace Frazee (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) teamed up for a block to keep the two-point advantage intact at 10-8. Â The Lakers led 13-11 and 14-13 before WSU used a 7-0 run to take a 20-14 lead. Â Frazee tallied two aces during the rally. Â LSSU trimmed the deficit to 21-19 and 22-20. Â A kill from Krenz and a combo block by Krenz and Frazee made it 24-20 and a
Hailey Richardson (New Boston, Mich. / Huron) ended the set with a kill.
Richardson gave the Green & Gold a 7-5 lead in the third set with a kill and an ace from
Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.) pushed the home advantage to 10-7. Â Lake Superior State led 15-12 after a 5-0 run and eventually led 20-15. Â However, the momentum began to swing back to the home bench after a 5-1 run capped by a block from Fike and Richardson made it 21-20. Â The Lakers won the next two points to lead 23-20. Â WSU won the final five points, including kills from Richardson, Krenz, Duffield and
Julia Malewicz (Macomb, Mich. / Utica Academy for International Studies / Henry Ford II).
The third set was tied at 5-5 but the Warriors jumped out to an 8-5 lead after a 3-0 run. Â
Lauren VanderWal (Caldonia, Mich.) provided a spark off the bench and pushed the home lead to 13-8. Â Back-to-back points from Richardson later in the game made it 19-10 and a bad set by the Lakers gave Wayne State a 21-14 lead. Â LSSU made it interesting with a 4-0 run, trimming the margin to 22-20. Â WSU won three of the final four points to win 25-21 and complete the sweep. Â It's the fifth sweep of the season for the Warriors.
LEADING THE WARRIORS
Richardson notched her seventh consecutive double-double with a team-high 13 kills and 17 digs. Â Duffield collected 33 assists, while
Ellie Rodriguez (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Catholic Central) led the team with 23 digs.
