Laker Tennis Competes Against Lawrence Tech - Men's Team Earns First Victory of the Season, Women's Team Falls in Competitive Matches

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. - The Lake Superior State men's and women's tennis teams competed against the Lawrence Tech University Blue Devils on Monday, Feb. 24 at the Franklin Athletic Club in Southfield, Mich. The men's team won the matchup by a final score of 4-2 while the women's team lost by a close score of 4-3. 

The men's team started by earning the doubles point against the Blue Devils as the No. 2 pair of Harris Irfan Ul Hag and Ali Sahibzada, and the No. 3 pair of Krishan Taneja and Diego Penz each won to give the Lakers the advantage. The Lakers top pair of Joe GIlman and Juho Kantola fell in the tiebreaker.

In singles play, the Lakers top two players - Gilman and Kantola - each fell in the tiebreaker third set of play. The Lakers No. 3. No. 4 and No. 5 singles players each clinched wins in their sets to give Lake State the non-conference win. Taneja defeated his opponent by scores of 6-1 and 7-6(1) while Sahibzada and Irfan Ul Haq each won their matches in two sets. 

In the women's competition, the Lakers were also able to grab the doubles point with the team's No. 1 pair of Muskaan Ranjan/Nadege Koua winning their match, 6-4 and the No. 2 pair of Keegan Malpass/Alexiann Drouin recording a victory, 6-1. 

Drouin, the Lakers No. 1 singles player, won her match in straight sets, each by a score of 6-2. Koua won as the No. 2 singles player for the Lakers won a highly competitive match with scores of 5-7, 7-5, 1-0(5). LSSU's No. 3-6 singles players each fell in their matches to the Blue Devils to drop the meeting by a final score of 4-2. 

The Lakers will return to the court for the team's annual spring break trip with four matches scheduled in the upcoming week, beginning with a match on Saturday, Feb. 29 at 11:00 a.m. at the University of Illinois-Springfield.
