Women's Basketball Falls to #7-Ferris State

Shea Tripp led the Warriors with 10 points in the contest.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (11-6 overall, 4-4 GLIAC) fell 80-46 to visiting #7-Ferris State (13-2 overall, 7-1 GLIAC) on Thursday evening inside the Wayne State Fieldhouse.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
The Warriors opened the scoring with the game's first five points.  Junior guard Alyssa Leister (St. Louis, Mich. / Alma) drained a three-pointer, before redshirt senior guard Kate McArthur (Warren, Mich. / Cousino (Central Michigan)) followed with a jumper.  Despite being held scoreless for over four minutes to begin the contest, Ferris State went on to outscore the hosts 17-7 in the first 10 minutes.  That stretch included a 13-0 run between 6:26 and 1:38 remaining in the period.  Junior forward Shea Tripp (Jackson, Mich. / Michigan Center) ended WSU's scoring drought of over five minutes via a lay-up, which were the team's final points of the stanza.

Second Quarter
The Bulldogs doubled up the Warriors 20-10 over the next 10 minute span heading into halftime.  FSU led by as many as 16 (23-7) after scoring the first six points of the new quarter, the last two points coming on a jumper from Chloe Idoni with 8:16 to play.  A triple from redshirt senior guard Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.) were the lone points on the scoresheet for WSU in over a six minute stretch.

Over the final 4:11 of game time in the period, Ferris State outscored the Green and Gold by just one (8-7).  McArthur had a triple and a jumper in that span, while sophomore forward Mackenzie Miller (Schoolcraft, Mich. (Lakeland University)) connected on a jumper.

Third Quarter
The guests went on a 17-0 run over the initial 5:17 of the new half, before a triple by sophomore forward Gabi Lutchka (Grass Lake, Mich.) ended the drought for Wayne State.  FSU led by as many as 40 (60-20) following a three-pointer by Mallory McCartney.  The Warriors were able to cut that deficit down to 31 (63-32) by the end of the stanza thanks to a 12-3 run of their own during the last 3:08 of the third.  Tripp garnered eight points in a row for WSU during that time frame, with Lutchka and freshman guard McKenna Ferguson (Grandville, Mich. / Byron Center) also connecting on jumpers.

Fourth Quarter
The final frame was the closest of the evening, with the Bulldogs outpacing the Green and Gold by three (17-14) over the final 10 minutes.  WSU trimmed its deficit to 29 (68-39) with 5:38 remaining on Ferguson's jump shot, and later to 25 (71-46) after a lay-up from freshman guard Annabel Ayrault (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North) with 3:40 left.  That bucket from Ayrault concluded a 7-0 run for the Warriors between 5:00 and 3:40, with the freshman responsible for the last four points in the stretch.

Ferris State scored the last nine points following that as Wayne State did not convert on the scoreboard for the remainder of the contest.

TEAM STATS
Ferris State made 28 of its 59 shots from the field for 47 percent, while Wayne State was 19-of-50 (38 percent).  FSU nailed 10 of its 23 three-pointers (43 percent), compared to WSU's 4-of-18 (22 percent).  The Bulldogs went to the charity stripe 25 times and knocked down 14 (56 percent), while the Warriors had eight foul shots and made half of them (50 percent).  Ferris State blocked eight shots for the game, including six in the first half alone.  The visitors out-rebounded the hosts 45-23, and gained 31 points from turnovers to the Green and Gold's nine.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Tripp led the team with 10 points, the lone Warrior in double-figures for the evening.  McArthur (five assists) and Ayrault (four) were responsible for nine of WSU's 12 assists for the game.  Tripp and McArthur were two of four players in the game to tie for the game-best with three steals.

LEADING THE BULLDOGS
Idoni had 18 to lead all scorers, while also grabbing six rebounds, three steals, two blocked shots, and two assists.  Emma Schierbeek had 10 points even though she only played the final 6:05, and was the other FSU player in double figures.  McCartney dished out five assists to tie for the game best.  All but one Ferris State player found the scoreboard on Thursday.
